The Best Way to Get Motivated for the Gym | T Nation

Don't train because you're motivated; train to become motivated. Unless you're preparing for a competition, you probably won't feel fired-up on a daily basis. So show up, put in the effort, and find your motivation in the middle of the set. It'll be there waiting for you... unless you are completely physically burnt out. And that likely will only happen if you're an advanced athlete who trains constantly or is ill.

Tip: Do Tom Platz Iso-Holds for Gains | T Nation

This is a classic movement that's been all but forgotten. I'm bringing them back with a twist that Tom Platz taught me. While visiting him, we did iso-holds, but while in the hold position, Tom actually applied additional pressure, making me "tense" the muscle even more. This is probably the most brutal high-intensity technique I use, pain-wise.

The 6 Biggest Leg-Press Mistakes Solved!

"Your base of support becomes much smaller when your heels lift off, leaving you unbalanced and reducing your ability to perform a controlled rep," says Ciaran Fairman, MS, CISSN, a doctorate student in kinesiology at The Ohio State University. "Second, you have much less force production than if you were to have your full foot in contact, which also allows you to drive through your heels. Finally, lifting the heels will increase shear forces on the knee. Essentially, you won't be able to lift as much, you won't have as much control over the weight, and you'll be putting more pressure on your knees than necessary." [1]

6 Sex Performance Problems Fixed at the Gym

Sadly, satisfaction isn’t a guarantee when you have sex in the real world. That means if you’re looking for an encore performance or a recurring role as a sex partner or friend with benefits, you need to earn your spot on the roster. In other words, you need to be on your A game. So if one of these seven sex-related issues has, uh, popped up in the past, try implementing the corresponding remedy so it doesn’t happen in the future.

How to help a woman have her first orgasm

As a sex therapist and the creator of Finishing School , an online course that teaches women how to orgasm alone and with their partners, I’ve had a lot of conversations about first orgasms. Women have told me the specific thoughts that go through their heads when they’re with their partners. They’ve told me the major challenges and blockages that they face in reaching their climax. I’ve developed techniques for helping women let go and topple over the edge, and I’ve honed those techniques after getting feedback from hundreds of women. And now, I want to share that knowledge with you! Here are eight steps you can take to help your lady have her very first orgasm, whether she’s your long-term partner or a one-night stand.

Rear Delts Makeover

The high-pulley cable reverse flye is a gym gem that trains the rear delts with smooth, constant tension. For increased effectiveness, make sure that the pulleys are set just above head height for your first set. On the sets that follow, adjust the pulleys down a click, which slightly alters the manner in which the rear delts are recruited.  You’ll finish with the reverse pec deck. By this point, your rear delts are likely toast but your core musculature is bound to be highly fatigued from all the standing resistance. The seated comforts and fixed range of motion of the reverse pec deck allow you to hit your rear delts for a few more sets.

If I keep putting on weight I’ll collapse like a house of cards under too much pressure.”

H2O for the Bodybuilder

As an athlete or a healthy person—you know soda is not the best choice for a beverage, but drinking plain water sometimes seems more like a chore rather than the right thing to do for your body. More and more people today are “hooked” on diet sodas and carbonated beverages than ever before. Bodybuilders on a contest diet like to drink it, as the carbonation keeps them full and they like the taste better than plain water. It also feels like a treat to have a diet soda in a world of plain, unseasoned contest foods. But not only can diet sodas hinder weight loss and upset your digestive process, they can also prevent your body from ridding itself of excess water. The hardest part of getting on the “drink water” bandwagon is getting of the soda roller coaster. Rather than going cold turkey and moving straight to plain water, I have a plan that I use with many athletes and clients that either have difculty getting enough fluids in or for those trying to kick the habit of carbonated drinks and sodas. If you are used to drinking diet soda and carbonated beverages, the easiest way I’ve found to kick the habit is to wean down.

6 Key Tips for Bigger, Better Squats

Squat day is the one that a lot lifters don’t get right. Too often you see the wannabe powerlifter hit some sets of squats and then head over to the leg curl and leg extension machines. While these might be a good idea for the “all show no go,” barb wire tattooed, beach-body types, it is a complete waste of time for the athlete seeking to add plates to the bar.

90-Degree Biceps Burn

STAGE 3 | Without missing a beat, he begins a third sequence, this time using a full range of motion for another three sets of 10, allowing him to fatigue both the shorter and longer muscle heads. At the top, he holds for a one-second peak contraction, and he applies powerful negative resistance all the way down. “To some, this may sound like an easy workout,” Abbew warns, “but since it’s nonstop and intense, by the time I’m finished, my biceps are completely fried.” Abbew does only one exercise per workout, such as the one-arm dumbbell preacher bench spider curls just described above, but he also understands the value of employing a different exercise every time he trains biceps. Almost always, though, it’s an alternating movement: 10 reps with one arm, then 10 reps with the other, and always nonstop. “I just carry on through,” he says. “By the time I’m finished with one arm, the other arm is ready to go again.” Here are three of his favorites.

The Every-Person’s Guide To Immune System Support

The thing is, when I started running my own business I planned for many things. I did not plan for how spending more than 150 days per year traveling might create a universe of perpetual illness. The only change is that my travel schedule might make me a little more susceptible to reoccurring illness. Or, that’s what I thought.

5 Exercises for Explosive Lat Development

This is inspired by the great Vince Gironda, a pioneer in bodybuilding. This is a brutal variation of the classic pull-up. To perform this exercise get the v-bar attachment and put it over the pull-up bar so that one handle is on each side of the pull-up bar. Hold on to the v-bar and let the body hang. Next perform a pull-up, but instead of getting your chin over the bar you are going to pull yourself up so that the v-bar touches your sternum. This will require you to lean back at the top.

Lift Heavy for More Muscle

Get stuck in such a rut and your results are bound to level off, to plateau. At this point, it’s about time to switch things up. If you’re like me, you’re not a fan of high reps – sets of 15, 20+ – so the only other option for changing things up from a rep-count standpoint is to decrease reps, which naturally means you’ll have to go a little heavier than you’re used to with 8-12 reps.   When my routine starts to get a little stale, one thing I love doing is working in heavy sets. Not necessarily sets of one, two or three reps (I’m not a powerlifter), but rather sets of five and six reps. Going heavy like this, I feel, gives the body a different training stimulus to promote plateau-busting. Plus, I just like the way my muscles feel when they’ve handled some heavier weights – they feel stronger, of course, but also a bit harder, and I feel leaner, too. I like that.

46
The workout plan to build your 'V' taper

The V-taper is mainly achieved by widening the lats and adding density to the shoulders, which you can do with chinup variations and lateral raises. But to maximize your look in a suit, you have to be aware of not only which muscles to build but also which to ease up on. Thick arms can throw off the fit of the suit, and big quads can cause the pant legs to bunch near the crotch. The answer isn’t to neglect these muscles but just not to isolate them—training them with lifts that work them in conjunction with other muscles leads to more balanced size gains. In short, you’ll let presses, chinups, and squats train the triceps, biceps, and legs while they offer residual benefits to your shoulders and back.

The Simple Facts of Whey VS. Casein

The protein you choose between meals can make a difference. When dieting, reach for a whey shake between meals — it may aid you in eating less throughout the day, thus helping you to burn more than you take in. When trying to gain mass, go with casein shakes between meals. They won’t make you feel as full, so that you’ll be able to eat more quality food at meals, which will help you put on more quality muscle mass. No matter the phase you’re in, include whey protein before and after workouts and casein before bedtime. – FLEX

Angela Duckworth: "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance" | Talks at Google

Author Angela Duckworth visited Google's office in NYC to discuss her book, "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance" with Ben Fried, Google's CIO and Site Lead in NYC. In GRIT, Angela Duckworth explores the science of why some people succeed and others fail, and why talent alone doesn’t guarantee success. She shows us that perseverance and passion matter at least as much as talent and intelligence. Angela Duckworth, PhD, is a 2013 MacArthur Fellow and professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. An expert in non-I.Q. competencies, she has advised the White House, the World Bank, NBA and NFL teams, and Fortune 500 CEOs. Prior to her career in research, she taught children math and science and was the co-founder of a summer school for low-income children that won the Better Government Award from the state of Massachusetts. She completed her BA in neurobiology at Harvard, her MSc in neuroscience at Oxford, and her PhD in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. More recently, she co-founded the Character Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development in children.
