High Reps, Low Reps? Which Rep Scheme Is Best?

When you continue to push and grunt with no concrete strategy other than "hard work," you get injured or beat-up. Few things devour reasonable progress faster than what we'll call "middle ground" training. That is, always training with the same set or rep scheme and with the same intensity. If you default to training in the 8, 10, or 12 rep range, I hate to break it to you, but your growth is simply wallowing in no-gain's land.

Tip: A Better Way to Build Pecs | T Nation

One way to do that is to raise the resistance curve at the point where it starts to decline so that the muscles are at a disadvantage for a longer period of time. This is where accommodating resistance comes into play, like using bands to increase the resistance where it normally would descend.

The Winter Bulk Up: How to gain muscle in 4 weeks

3. The Bulk Up plan revolves around "straight sets" versus the use of "super-sets" or "tri-sets". Once you complete a set of an exercise you will rest, then repeat for the prescribed number of sets that follow. This is another strategy to allow for ample recovery. The only time "tri-sets" will be used are for short ab/core workouts at the end.

Broke Man's Guide to Muscle-Building Groceries

Do you truly use all the food you buy? You probably don't. Before stepping out of the house to buy more food, take an inventory of what you already have. Condiments, spices, frozen and canned food items should be on at that inventory list; this can easily slash your weekly food bill. Next on the list should be leftovers. Last night’s dinner can be today’s lunch, freeze it and it could be next week's lunch too. If you’re one to toss food after a meal, then you are that average American who’s a national statistic. That stat: 28 to 43 dollars of about 20 pounds of food a month gets tossed. So lesson learned here, learn to love your leftovers.

7
Push-Ups for Real Strength | T Nation

This part is easy. Just keep the lower body tight. Sure, you can squeeze the glutes and flex the quads, but you don't need to go full-blown high-threshold when you're doing a standard push-up. Instead, find a normal amount of tension for the task at hand. Save all those high-tension strategies for when you're doing those single-arm, blindfolded push-ups on a medicine ball.

8
Body-Part Splits Are Dead | T Nation

Lifting weights is a skill, a skill that only gets better with practice. Ask any world-class pianist, ballerina, or artist, and they would agree: You can't just show up once a week and expect to perfect your craft. Yet by working each muscle only once a week, as with a body-part split, that's exactly what you're doing. On the flip side, by increasing frequency, you give yourself more opportunities to practice.

9
The Best Way to Get Motivated for the Gym | T Nation

Don't train because you're motivated; train to become motivated. Unless you're preparing for a competition, you probably won't feel fired-up on a daily basis. So show up, put in the effort, and find your motivation in the middle of the set. It'll be there waiting for you... unless you are completely physically burnt out. And that likely will only happen if you're an advanced athlete who trains constantly or is ill.

Tip: Do Tom Platz Iso-Holds for Gains | T Nation

This is a classic movement that's been all but forgotten. I'm bringing them back with a twist that Tom Platz taught me. While visiting him, we did iso-holds, but while in the hold position, Tom actually applied additional pressure, making me "tense" the muscle even more. This is probably the most brutal high-intensity technique I use, pain-wise.

The workout to build shoulders like Vin Diesel

Because the joints in the shoulder are very mobile, they’re more susceptible to injury than other body parts, especially when you’re pressing heavy weights. Warming up properly so that the shoulders are pumped and well-prepared for heavier training to come cuts down your risk of feeling something pop or strain. That’s why we want you to follow the warmup we’ve included before the real lifting begins. It’s also why we put traditional meat-and-potatoes muscle-building moves like the military press later in the workouts. Yes, the exercises you do beforehand might fatigue you and limit the weight you can use on these lifts, but you’ll make it up in short order as you adapt.

Go back only as far as you can handle while still maintaining your original spine position. If you start to arch excessively and/or feel them in your lower back, you've gone too far. They're a lot tougher than they look, so it probably won't take much range of motion to feel them working.

How to burn fat

Cut back on carbs : Remember how insulin has the biggest impact on fat storage? Well, carbs have the biggest impact on insulin. ”Too many carbohydrates leads to a spike in the hormone and then to more fat storage,” Seedman explains. Not only should you cut back on carbs, but your insulin will spike even more from processed ones, so cut any carb that’s not a whole grain or from real produce completely. And don’t worry: Carbs are traditionally thought of as your body’s main source of energy, but your body also has the ability to fuel from fat, so if you’re increasing your fat and protein intake, your body doesn’t need as many carbs to run. You still need some amount of carbohydrates to regulate certain biological processes, like your muscles’ ability to stay hydrated and maintain structural integrity, so don’t cut the macronutrient completely, Seedman warns. For a high-fat, low-carb diet, aim for at least .5 of your bodyweight (so a 200 lb person would eat at least 100 grams of carbs per day), he suggests. For a more balanced calorie-restricted diet, that number jumps to .75 to 1.5 grams per pound of bodyweight.

Black Coffee for Bodybuilders

For years FLEX has recommended that bodybuilders drink plenty of black coffee every day. And we’re happy (and a bit surprised) to welcome the U.S. government aboard now that a dietary panel made a similar recommendation earlier this year: Every healthy adult should drink three to five cups of black coffee per day for optimal health. That’s particularly good news for bodybuilders who are trying to cut body fat while staying energized for intense workouts. Here are five ways black coffee helps support your bodybuilding gains.

20
Avoid These Six Mistakes In the Gym

Considering those six rules, here’s an important caveat: just because someone at your gym, or even a pro bodybuilder like me, tells you to do something, that’s no reason to follow his every move. Analyze the advice you receive as you apply it to yourself, and don’t follow a routine or diet endlessly if you’re not seeing tangible results. That’s not to say you should haphazardly switch directions at every sign of a plateau — far from it. But be ready to tweak your approach while evaluating its effects.

10 Supps You Never Thought of

Also known as urtica dioica, stinging nettle root is a type of nettle that predominantly grows in South America. Your dad or grandfather may take it to relieve symptoms of his enlarged prostate and to reduce his blood pressure. But even young guys can benefit from using this supplement - stinging nettle root can help to naturally boost testosterone levels by keeping the testosterone molecule free from a carrier protein known as sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). While SHBG helps testosterone stay in the blood longer, it also prevents it from binding with its specific receptors in muscle cells. By freeing up testosterone from SHBG, you'll experience higher levels of free testosterone in the body, which can induce muscle growth. Stinging nettle root also helps boost T levels by preventing its conversion to dihydrotestosterone. While testosterone has anabolic effects in muscle cells, dihydrotestosterone has negative effects such as prostate growth. Preventing this conversion by adding stinging nettle root to your supplement regimen means you'll have more anabolic testosterone available.

Muscle in Minutes: Shoulders

Building well-capped shoulders , some would say, takes years and years of heavy pressing and experimentation. Those folks aren’t entirely wrong but it’s not exactly what you want to hear if you’re already behind the curve in this department. By training your delts with a simple, exercise-minimal routine, twice per week, you can start to make up ground on the lifetime pressers pretty quickly. Delts are fast to respond to proper overload and they can handle a reasonable amount of volume. So even if you can’t overhead press 250 pounds for 3-4 reps, you can still reap some appreciable gains from a more conservative press-first approach.

26
Tip: Master the Double Under | T Nation

Before attempting your first double under, make sure you get comfortable with single-under skipping at a fast pace. Practice adding velocity with every turn of the rope, even if it doesn't seem necessary. Doing this ensures you're fully in control of the rope. Many beginners allow the rope to turn on its own once they get it started. This will eventually set the rope and foot speed out of sync (the rope is influenced by the friction of the ground). Set the pace of the rope – don't allow the rope to set your pace.

The 10 Worst Things You’re Doing for Your Muscles

But sometimes our habits in and out of the gym unknowingly can sabotage our hard work—or at least make us less efficient in producing the results we’re striving so hard to achieve. Here are the 10 worst things you’re doing for your muscles and what you can do instead.

T-ransformation 2017: Benanything's Log

well that was it for the entire day, walked around a bit and went to the hospital later just to check for internal injuries, if there were any. Took some x rays, nothing is broken. Might've strained my left wrist/arm though so... I've 0 fully functioning hands now. That and I got some scratches on my ear and some bruising all over the place.

30
Lift Heavy for More Muscle

Get stuck in such a rut and your results are bound to level off, to plateau. At this point, it’s about time to switch things up. If you’re like me, you’re not a fan of high reps – sets of 15, 20+ – so the only other option for changing things up from a rep-count standpoint is to decrease reps, which naturally means you’ll have to go a little heavier than you’re used to with 8-12 reps.   When my routine starts to get a little stale, one thing I love doing is working in heavy sets. Not necessarily sets of one, two or three reps (I’m not a powerlifter), but rather sets of five and six reps. Going heavy like this, I feel, gives the body a different training stimulus to promote plateau-busting. Plus, I just like the way my muscles feel when they’ve handled some heavier weights – they feel stronger, of course, but also a bit harder, and I feel leaner, too. I like that.

Sagittarius Horoscope for Thursday, January 19, 2017

Thursday, January 19, 2017 - Reality reins you in now and you probably won't like having your wings clipped if you recently took an issue too far. Although you can't fly freely today, retreating won't help the situation either. The stress from assertive Mars' dynamic square to repressive Saturn in your sign can be irritating, especially if you're itching for a little adventure. But it's not useful to blindly ignore the signs; instead, postpone any new activities until you address the current blockages. If you are persistent without forcing the issue, the resistance will play out on its own.

We Asked 20 Women: What non-sexual things turn you on to a guy?

That's because women aren't solely turned on by the obvious triggers. Things that may seem completely off-target, non-sexual, maybe even a little odd—like watching you go through your morning routine—can make her more attracted to you. We don't want you getting a complex or anything, thinking everything you do and say is slaying the ladies; but you might want to pay a bit more attention.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Part 2! Bodybuilding, Investing, and Online Battles

This podcast is brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple and world-famous investors. It has exploded in popularity in the last two years and now has more than $2.5B under management. In fact, some of my good investor friends in Silicon Valley have millions of their own money in Wealthfront. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it’s all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams.

Where to Include Rotator Cuff Exercises?

Also from my experience there is no better way of keeping your shoulders healthy than doing power snatches at the start of each session where you maybe doing pushing exercises! In all honesty rotater cuff work external rotations with bands or dunbell never did much for me! But my shoulders were bullet proof from doing power snatches from hang it strengthens those rotaters amazingly and keeps the strength ratio in check as I don't see how doing 5kg dunbell external rotation can balance out the weight that you bench or overhead press! So I believe that everyone should learn to power snatch if they want healthy shoulders plus amazing mobility in the shoulder girdle. Anyway just another option for you

5 things every guy should know about weight loss

I do not suggest intermittent fasting to people whose diet is not based on whole foods. In my experience, someone who is not in optimal health often has a sluggish metabolism. If the metabolism is sluggish, spacing all your meals into a six- to nine-hour window will not make the body burn fuel and fat optimally, thus slowing fat burning and decreasing energy. You may lose weight and even sometimes feel more energetic for a week or so, but at the price of wasting muscle. In fat-loss terms, breaking down muscle often leads to long-term failure. I recommend first building a strong foundation, then trying some quick results—stuff like intermittent fasting if you really want to.

Eight Facts About Carbohydrates

When you eat carbs, your body responds by releasing the hormone insulin. Insulin helps energize your training by pushing glucose, the basic energy unit found in carbs, into your muscle. Insulin also helps push protein into muscles, leading to growth. The downside of eating too many fast-digesting carbs and triggering insulin release is that it facilitates the conversion of any excess carbs to fat. The solution is to choose natural (slow-digesting) carbs and to consume them in amounts and at times that support your bodybuilding goals. Gram for gram, they release less insulin than fast-digesting carbs, helping you control your bodyfat levels.
