Trainer Q&A: How Much Protein Do I Need After a Workout?

In terms of timing, you’ll often hear individuals reference the “anabolic window” - a period of time after your workout that leads to the best recovery. Usually this time frame ranges between 45 minutes to an hour post-workout. According to Miyaki, what you eat post-workout is important, but not for the reasons most people think. “The primary goal post-workout should be to provide your body with an immediate fuel source to prevent it from breaking down muscle tissue for energy.” As a result, Miyaki advises lifters to include some fast digesting carbs along with protein after a lift. The carbs will help spare your body’s own energy source and the protein will help to repair muscle and encourage muscle growth . Don’t be extremely worried if you can’t get food in immediately after exercise. Although the anabolic window is important, “building muscle is not just about what you do immediately post-workout, it is about what you do with your overall diet,” Miyaki cautions.

The 30 Best Abs Exercises of All Time

Everyone is different; some may get abs from soley working the belly to exhaustion while others may get their abs to pop without a single situp. But to train the core effectively, it comes down to the three planes of motion: frontal, sagittal, and transerve. Doing abs exercises in a circuit style keeps the intensity high and will likely lead to more fat loss.

10 Best Moves to Lose Your Love Handles

You’ve tried situps, cardio, and dumbbell side bends, but nothing seems to get rid of that stubborn belly fat on your sides. Commonly called “love handles,” this area of your torso is part of the waist-to-hip ratio, an indicator of overall health. If you have too much cushion around your waist, ask yourself, "How hard am I really working in the gym?" To get the best moves for a slim torso , we asked Sadik Hadzovic, IFBB Men’s Physique professional for his 10 favorite exercises to keep love handles away. "This workout is effective because it's fast paced and designed to target both the rectus abdominals and the transverse abdominals," says Hadzovic. "To burn fat you must do more then just crunches and situps; You need to recruit your entire body to enter a thermogenic state that leads to an accelerated rate of fat loss." Complete your dream physique with these 10 moves that will carve up your core fast.

Making Muscles Out of Meals

If putting on muscle were easy, there would be jacked guys everywhere. But there are obstacles and roadblocks everywhere in the pursuit of lean mass, especially with regard to nutrition. Although you’re most likely familiar with the basic principles of a bodybuilding diet, we’ve compiled a list that includes some overlooked staples as well as some more novel muscle-building foods (algae, anyone?) to assist you in your get-big endeavor. Divided into three levels, each builds upon the prior, ensuring you’ll get the most each food has to offer. Level One focuses on solid choices for macronutrients, Level Two centers on muscle stamina and recovery and Level Three highlights foods that exert specific and specialized influences over anabolism.

Deload to Reload

Scaling back every month or so is a good rule of thumb, but this depends on the individual. Those who require more recovery from heavy lifting may need to deload every fourth week, while guys who don’t tend to break down as quickly can probably get away with deloading every seventh or eighth week. “If you’re a regular gym-goer, you’re going to have to find out what works best for your body,” Smitley says. “Experience level will also determine the deload. If you have a beginner, deloading every fourth week is almost a waste because they’re so new to weight training that the body will continue to adapt to anything. But if you get someone who’s been in the game for a long time, he’s probably going to deload every fourth week as a norm.”

The Hangover Workout

One bottle of beer is about 100 worthless calories. It offers no value—it's just junk. Throw back two, three, or four more and you're putting an awfully big dent in your recommended total caloric intake when you add them on top of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But the followers and believers of balance and moderation like to chill out and have a beer here and there. And if you're a bro, you probably like to pound 30-packs with your fellow brosephs, bromies, and brodudes. Regardless of whether you're a clean-eatin', non-drinkin' fitness freak, or a habitual party-hoppin', liquor-lovin' lunatic, this workout is here to help you wipe the slate clean. Is it probably a better idea to take the day off, pound water, sleep in, and save the training for another day? Probably. But, whatever, just work off the crap now.

Eight Ways to Drink Like an Athlete

Face it, gents: Despite all of your  healthy choices , the threat of the beer gut isn’t enough to stand between you and a booze-soaked social calendar. You know you’re going to do it anyway so you might as well approach the bar just like you approach the  bench : as a health-conscious athlete. The good news is, it’s not all hangovers and empty caloric intake; there’s plenty of science behind the health benefits of alcohol. A  study  published in the  American Journal of Epidemiology  linked moderate drinkers to healthier weights than those who binge or abstain from alcohol all together. And the perks of imbibing don’t stop there. Stay fit and even gain some fringe benefits with these healthy drinking habits.

The Best Winter Training and Ski Gear

But it’s more than just ice axes and anoraks. Today, these companies are innovating weatherproof apparel—barely there jackets and grippy, waterproof shoes—that are lightweight and breath- able for high-elevation endurance sports like trail running. And for powderhounds, they’re creating versatile, rugged gear that’s quite literally tough enough to ski off the likes of Everest and Denali, so your local slopes shouldn’t be a problem. The upshot is that you can tackle winter training and ski trips in comfort and, yes, save your excuses.

Back on Track

In 2008, FLEX editors undertook a rather daunting task, journalistically speaking —they gathered to choose the 20 bodybuilders who, in their estimation, represented the best back development of all time. The list was stacked with greats, from Ronnie Coleman and Dorian Yates at the top of the heap to Melvin Anthony and Albert Beckles snagging the final two spots. You could argue vociferously for a favorite who didn’t make the list (and have a valid point), but all told, no one could debate the quality of the final 20. They were giants in a sport that boasts more than its fair share of larger-than-life physiques.

It’s equally impossible to nail him down on a general chest workout, since the exercises, the order in which they’re performed, and the number of reps and sets is constantly changing. Maybe he can tell you what he did in his last chest workout; there aren’t a lot of straight answers with Greene. Most of the explanation is going to be about his mental state and how he hopes other weight trainers are thinking and little to none of the usual nuts-and-bolts, three-sets-of-10 palaver.

Easy Gains for the Hardgainer

But the task is far from easy. The hardgainer will typically have a poor appetite and be naturally “weaker” in regard to muscle strength. This means diligent, planned eating will take priority and daily appointments with heavy iron will need to be habitual. As the hardgainer slowly but surely gets meals down and masters the mechanics of old-school Olympic lifts, his/ her muscle mass and muscle strength will inevitably increase.

Cursing Is Useful, We Swear

Ongoing research at Keele U. shows that swearing is an actual f—king emotion—not just an off-color outburst. In the newest findings, subjects who felt riled up after playing a video game cussed more and faster than calmer subjects.“Swearing is an emotion, so it comes more easily— people are ‘better’ at it—when aroused,” says Keele’s Richard Stephens, Ph.D. It can also relieve pain, Stephens says, citing a test in which subjects allowed to swear were able to keep their hands submerged in ice water longer than those who had to watch their mouths. “It starts to explain why we swear,” says Stephens. “It gives us a release .” We can’t wait to tell Mom.

When he couldn’t get another full rep, he enlisted just enough help on forced reps. After that, he did half reps, and when he couldn’t get half reps, he did quarter reps, and then he just held the weight against the forces of gravity until his muscles, screaming for mercy, admitted defeat. He would not lose.

7 Ways To Force Muscle Growth - Bodybuilding.com

With the logic of overload training, if someone just benches the bar and adds five pounds each week for three years, they'll break the 722-pound bench world record by 103 pounds in that short time span. Not very realistic! While piling the weight on the bar is the most effective overload technique, it only works to a point. Luckily, when adding pounds hits a plateau, there are other variables you can manipulate to effectively overload your training.

The Rebound Effect

If you’ve ever dieted for a bodybuilding contest — or for an extended period just to reduce bodyfat — then you know what you want to do right after that : nothing but eat all the decadent foods that you’ve been avoiding for the past couple of months. Sure, that’s one way to follow up a restricted diet, but it can turn into a disaster, resulting in startling bodyfat gains. A better strategy is to use this time to gain impressive heaps of muscle by taking advantage of the body’s rebound effect. The best gains of an entire year often come in the first few weeks after a cutting phase, making that period of time ideal for growth. In fact, you can easily add five, six or even 10 pounds of real muscle mass in just six short weeks. Here are seven steps you can use to transition from a diet straight into six weeks of pure anabolism.

True Grit

For many bodybuilders, their passion for lifting weights began in high school. Whether it was getting strong for football or just wanting to put more size on a teenage frame, it was the start of a lifelong journey. But not many teenagers have the desire or discipline to actually compete at that age. Between school, family obligations, and maybe even a part-time job, fnding the time to work out, do cardio, and cook clean food generally dissuades most from even thinking about it. But Cody Montgomery has done all that for the past several years, winning the NPC Teen Nationals twice. Now a freshman at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Montgomery is preparing once again for the Teen Nationals, hoping to sweep both the Teen—which would make him an unprecedented three-time champ—and the Collegiate overall trophies.

Burn It: Score the Cheapest Airline Ticket Possible

Airline ticket prices are governed by supercomputers employing algorithms that take advantage of dynamic pricing, which means that costs are never fixed. Instead, they rise and fall in response to demand and a host of other factors. Believe it or not, the very same seat on a given flight is typically offered at around 20 different prices. On average, 92% of passengers snag their ticket at some type of discount, although rarely the same one. Why? Apparently this is the best way to maximize profit in a bankruptcy-prone industry where every cent matters—but that’s another column.

EliteFTS: elitefts Pro Average Compression Floss Band

Muscular compression cemented its place in recovery protocols years ago, but now weve found a better form of tight wrap: Pro Compression Floss Bands. The use of Pro Compression Floss Bands has been reported to alleviate pain around achy muscles, joints, and tendons through short and long-term applications. Many athletes and competitive lifters have used the Pro Compression Floss Bands to facilitate proper motor patterns, mend biomechanical positioning, and prepare for the demanding rigors of intense training. How to Use the Pro Compression Floss Bands: The possible applications of the Pro Compression Floss Bands are endless. The most common methods include wrapping an achy or non-responsive muscular-joint area and spending several minutes performing motions that target the afflicted area. For instance, to aid a nagging knee, an athlete may use a Pro Compression Floss band to tightly wrap above and below the knee. Then, by performing bodyweight squats for several minutes, the tissue surrounding the knee becomes less bothersome and opens up the range of motion for safer, optimal training conditions.
