Power Surge: Chest Blast

This month I want to show you my chest workout, which serves as a perfect introduction to the concepts of power bodybuilding. Like a powerlifting workout, reps are kept low to allow you to use the heaviest possible weight. You’ll also rest 3–5 minutes between sets, letting you make a full recovery and continue lifting heavy throughout the session. The volume necessary to satisfy the bodybuilding portion of this equation comes from the number of total sets used; though you’ll do only four exercises in total, you’ll do 28 sets, including warmups. 5 Ways to Beat Workout Soreness

Lifting weights damages muscle tissue—but that’s OK, because muscle damage as a result of resistance training contributes to hypertrophy (increase in muscle size) if the training is done properly. When muscle tissue is damaged, you may feel soreness within the next couple of days. While there are many theories as to why delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) occurs, most research suggests that it's a result of pain receptors being sensitized by the inflammatory response to muscle tissue damage. Luckily, there are ways to quickly recover from DOMS and get right back into getting strong. Use these strategies immediately after your workout to speed up healing so you build muscle faster.

Lean Muscle Cardio Workout

There’s a name for this. It’s called “getting in shape,” and it should be done at least four days per week. You can use any machine you want, but my favorite method of doing steady state is to simply jack up a treadmill to the highest possible incline and walk at a pace that keeps my heart rate between 125 and 140 beats per minute. I measure this by placing my hands on the sensors that come with most modern treadmills. I’ll do this for 30 minutes each day, usually before I lift weights, and the benefits of this work have been incredible in terms of improved body composition, better sleep and an improved feeling of overall well being. Best of all, I’m recovering faster than ever, and I’m capable of doing a lot more work in the gym.

The first big-time bodybuilding show I ever attended was the 1993 NPC USA Championships, at which Chris Cormier won the heavyweight and overall titles. Kerry and I were able to fly out to California for that contest because of a misprint in the newspaper. It advertised roundtrip flights from Boston to Los Angeles for $99 when the price was supposed to be $199. We were on the phone trying to get through on the last day of the deal, and we got through just before midnight. When I finally spoke to an agent, I was told it was a misprint, and I said, “But you have to honor this ad, correct?” The agent agreed. So Kerry and I got to go to California for $200, and we watched the 1993 USA. Then we trained at Gold’s Venice and I saw everyone there — that’s when I decided to become a pro bodybuilder. After winning my pro card in 1996 and then winning my first professional show in 2000 — the Night Of Champions in New York City — I finally made it to the top by winning the Mr. Olympia in 2006. It still hasn’t quite sunk in; it’s still surreal to sign photos “Jay Cutler, Mr. Olympia.” Right now I can’t help but think about how all of this is the culmination of a lifelong dream.

4 Ways to Rock Fat-Burning Intervals

Kettlebells come in plenty of sizes and, if you train at home, you’re going to pay for those extra pounds of the larger bells. With a moderately weighted kettlebell – think 35-44 pounds – you can get in a very high volume of work that addresses your glutes, hamstrings, lower back and metabolic machinery with the use of a single move. The Russian kettlebell swing is the easiest move to learn for non-kettlebellers – it is essentially an explosive hinge that lies somewhere between a Romanian deadlift and a partial squat. There are plenty of nuances to learn but to get started, with your knees slightly bent, shift your glutes back and keep your back flat and arms straight, then explosively shift your hips forward while swinging the bell out to eye level. Let gravity return the bell between your legs and slightly behind you. Get into a rhythm and focus on an explosive concentric action on each rep.
