Op-Ed: Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Christmas Challenge

Now I’m seeing how deeply and profoundly that same spirit of generosity is helping him. Yesterday, sick with a cold and shingles, ill and weak from chemotherapy, he barely get out of bed. He was pale, listless, and had no energy for anything, and had to be coaxed to the table for meals. Then he got a gift and a call from his idol, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He lit up when he opened the package, nearly in tears from delight. After the call, he was smiling and laughing. And this morning, he got up out of bed on his own. Insisted on doing his physical therapy exercises. Went for the longest walk he’s accomplished in weeks, a sparkle back in his eyes, color in his cheeks, and a smile on his face—all because of how his spirits had been lifted by an act of kindness.

Add the farmer’s walk to your cardio regimen. Hold moderate to heavy dumbbells at your sides with your abs pulled and take long strides, walking until you can no longer grip the dumbbells. Rest 90 seconds each time you fail and then go again, striding for 10-20 minutes total. This gives you the calorie burning of cardio while increasing your grip and core strength.

Squats are the king of leg exercises. It’s a natural body movement that incorporates flexion at all major lower body joints, causing max overload of the major muscles of the body. Increasing your squat strength will result in greater development throughout your entire lower body. Use the tried and true 5X5 method and focus on increasing weight each session to maximize this movement.

When it comes to building sheer mass, there is no better exercise than the barbell cheat curl. I would start the movement with a barbell at thigh level, shoulder-width grip, and nudge it into motion with a slight “kick” from my body. I’d choose a weight that was too heavy for me to curl using strict form, but not so heavy that I had to rely solely on body English to get the weight from point A to point B. The idea behind cheat curls is to get the barbell past your sticking points and let your muscles get stressed fully at the points where they would normally find the exercise easy. Because you’re stronger during the negative phase of a lift, the heavier weight used for cheat curls also lets you work the biceps during the all-important downward half of the movement.
