With lifestyle as a leading modifiable factor, some people can manage type 2 diabetes with exercise and changes to their diet. Previous research suggested that herbs may provide a natural way to help lower blood glucose. Elvira Gonzalez de Mejia, from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and colleagues tested four different herbs, either greenhouse-grown or dried commercial versions of Greek oregano ( Origanum vulgare ), marjoram ( Origanum majorana ), rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ) and Mexican oregano ( Lippia graveolens ), for their ability to interfere with a diabetes-related enzyme known as dipeptidyl peptidase IV. The team found that greenhouse herbs contained more polyphenols and flavonoids than the equivalent commercial herbs and that Greek oregano, Mexican oregano and rosemary were better inhibitors of the enzyme. “Overall,” the authors submit, “herbs contain several flavonoids that inhibit [dipeptidyl peptidase IV] and should be investigated further regarding their potential in diabetes management.”

Anatomically, the pecs are the large slabs of muscle on the upper chest, and they connect the chest and collarbone to the humerus, or upper-arm bone. The pectoralis major, the muscle’s formal name, adducts, flexes and medially rotates the humerus. If you move your arm across your chest, pull it down and rotate it inwardly, all against resistance, you’ll feel your pec contract. The pecs are a prime mover of the humerus, along with the delts and lats.


Several lines of evidence suggest that caloric intake influences the rate of aging and the onset of associated diseases in animals and possibly humans. An increasing body of clinical research shows that cumulative oxidative damage to macromolecules such as protein, lipids, and DNA also plays a major role in aging. Caloric restriction slows both the degree of oxidative damage and the associated decline in function. In other words, reducing our caloric intake will likely extend the life of the average human. But strength training athletes are not average humans. If we want to maintain our fitness long into our 40s, 50s, and 60s, we can’t eat 800 calories a day and hope to maintain our muscle mass. And therein lies the problem. Sarcopenia, or lack of skeletal muscle mass, is associated with declining immunity and susceptibility to disease. After all, one’s resilience to disease is a direct function of muscle mass.
