The 10x10 shred extension workouts

Whether you've heard of it or not, German Volume Training, or GVT for short, has been around the weightlifting world since the 70s. The idea between GVT is to overload your muscles with extreme volume, but with fewer exercises. The traditional setup you'd see would most likely be three main, compound exercises performed for a total of 10 sets at 10 repetitions each. Between each set you'd see a modest amount of rest—roughly a minute or two. And, as expected, the amount of weight used would need to be on the lighter side or else you'll burn out early. On paper, it doesn't sound too bad, but you'll soon realize that 300 reps is a ton of reps, and even more so when they are big-boy exercises. You may also see a couple isolation exercises thrown in for 3 sets at 10 repetitions each. For this particular mini-plan, we've modified traditional GVT. It's somewhat of a mutant.

Utilizing short and controlled fasts to get lean has become more and more popular. While some evidence supports it, most hypertrophy-minded people can’t swallow the idea of going that long without protein. A recent study from China shows that supplementing with L-carnitine while fasting preserves muscles mass and promotes fat burning. Subjects were give two grams of carnitine twice a day via injection. At the end of the experiment, the carnitine group lost more centimeters from their waist than the placebo group.

Treadmills are criminally underutilized. In fact, 94 out of 100 people who use treadmills are using them incorrectly. Good luck fact-checking that statistic, since it’s created by my own cynical observation. People use treadmills like they are an escape from reality. I see it all the time: Eyes focused somewhere off in the distance and a heart rate about four beats per minute faster than it would be at rest. My clients, and other members at Metroflex, however, look at the treadmill as a torture device. And that's because there is no escape while you're on that thing with me.

Machine training is great for calf work because it allows you to isolate the muscle and train it as hard and heavy as you want, but what about adding a little athleticism to the mix? If you’re bored with banging out set after set of machine raises, there are myriad other ways to give your calves their due, most of which offer exponentially more benefit than standard gym exercises in terms of improving your overall athletic ability and mobility while adding all the mass and definition you want. Read on to see the moves.

Two other examples of incorrect technique are using too much weight and lowering the dumbbells too far to the sides.  The idea of using too much weight doesn’t need much explanation.  Flyes aren’t a power exercise, and if you can’t perform reps without excessively bending your elbows, you’re working too heavy. In this case, decrease the weight. If you’re struggling with 40-pound dumbbells, try 30s or 25s. Using too great a range of motion is the second recipe for disaster. Once you’ve lowered the weights to the point at which your hands are even with your shoulders or you can feel a moderate, not painful, stretch in the pecs, that’s far enough. Lowering too far puts way too much stress on the pectoral muscles, shoulders and biceps, not to mention the vulnerable shoulder joint itself. To avoid this, always lower the dumbbells slowly so that momentum doesn’t carry you past the desired range of motion. Again, as soon as you feel the onset of a stretch in your pecs, switch directions smoothly.  Remember, nothing sets your development back further faster than serious injury.
