5-Step Fat Burning

As a fitness model and former successful natural bodybuilder, I have tried every diet in the book to get lean while holding on to muscle – carb backloading , carb cycling, ketogenic and even paleo. Each has its pros and cons. But just “dieting” isn’t enough. There are multiple branches of that tree and there are some particular training protocols that need to be observed along the way. The truth is that there are a number of factors that contribute to real fat-burning – the kind put on display by the guys you see on these pages. Here are five fundamental strategies that you can piece together to speed your shred .

Six-Week Power Abs Routine

The Power Abs Program's focus is to not only streamline your waist by getting rid of the flab but also etch in deep abdominal muscle - so whenever you take off your shirt, your  six-pack  will be clearly visible. The keys to such a look is a low-fat diet (that, you knew) and training your abs with weights - which you may not have known. And here's more: Powerlifters and strongmen have great abs. Sure, they're buried under layers of bodyfat, but deep under that flab are an incredibly developed rectus abdominis, external obliques, and the deeper internal obliques and transverse abdominis. Those guys need to have super-strong and well-developed ab muscles to lift the massive amounts of resistance required by their sports. Like a powerlifter, you want  strong abs . Without a well-developed midsection, you would bend like a twig when doing everyday tasks like lifting a toddler or carrying groceries. And a stronger midsection means more strength on all your other exercises, since that's your core. Unlike a powerlifter, however, you want a chiseled six-pack. But ripped, powerful abs seems like an oxymoron, right? Not with the Power Abs Program.

The Pullup-Pushup Workout

The only caveat to high-frequency training is the risk of overuse injuries, but you can avoid those by changing up your exercises so you don’t recruit the same muscles the same way every time. That’s why each of the workouts on these pages pairs up a different variation of the pullup and pushup.

Do Carbs Make You Fat?

Isn’t brown rice so much better than white? Not necessarily. Remember, it’s better to receive your fiber from plant foods and not 87 servings of whole grains. Brown rice is like most other cereal grains. The “anti-nutrient” or phytic acid that is problematic for digestion and nutrient absorption is located in the bran of the grain. This is removed in the milling process that essentially changes brown rice to white rice. It is one of the few exceptions where I believe food refining is actually beneficial. When you remove the bran, what you’re left with is an easily digested, “safe starch” food without any toxic compounds.

Back to Basics: Creating a Healthy Diet Plan

Diets are often overly complicated and make it unrealistic for most people to follow them. OPEN YOUR GROWTH WINDOW

One of the most crucial times of day for supporting muscle growth is immediately after workouts. When you finish training, you’ve damaged muscle tissue and you may have driven your body into a catabolic state where it breaks down muscle tissue to repair the muscles you’ve just trained. Your tank is likely on empty, too. But you don’t need food at this time. What you need is a range of fast-digesting carbs and amino acids that drive nutrients to your working muscles, protecting all of your muscles against breakdown. Here’s what you should take in as you’re walking out of the gym to get you back into a maximal anabolic state—before you go devour a clean whole-food meal.

Top 4 Tri Moves for a Bigger Bench

Grab the EZ Curl bar and a flat bench. Put your weight on the bar and then put a band around one end, run the band underneath the bench and connect to the other side of the bar. Make sure you start out with a skinny band, these are tougher than they look! Keep your elbows tucked in and lower the bar to forehead level and back up to locked arms. Make sure your elbows don’t flare out and try to keep your humerus angle constant throughout the lift. Start out by doing 3 sets of 12 repetitions.

How to Eat Before and After You Lift

Using common sense, or perhaps even bad personal experiences, the gist of this one isn’t tough to figure out – don’t chow down on burgers and shakes within an hour of a workout or all that hoisting and jostling will induce queasiness and shift your focus to keeping your lunch down, as opposed to trying to, you know, get stronger. “Avoid foods that are high in fat or fiber,” Perkins says. “Ideally, you’ll want a carb-protein-fat breakdown of about 40-40-20.” Perkins says that grabbing a meal 90 to 120 minutes prior to a workout is a solid timetable for most people, although digestion rates vary from person to person. A snack in the range of 200 to 250 calories in the last hour before a workout is also helpful to satisfy cravings and keep hunger pangs from ruining your exercise session. Perkins, of course, recommends Promax Original or Pro Series bars to tamp down food urges late in the game.

Super-Sized Shoulders

Overhead presses are generally seen as the best exercise for the shoulders, but they depend on your triceps, too. As you get stronger, it can be harder to lock out your elbows to finish the movement, and you may not be able to give the delts the stimulation they need to keep growing. The solution: Superset presses with upright rows.

27
Raise Your Reps to Reap New Muscle

Rules are meant to be broken, especially when it comes to your training. It’s true that a moderate rep range should be your mainstay for building size, but if you’ve been training for awhile, you need a more extreme approach now and then to shock your muscles into new gains .

Are We Designing Nutrition Labels All Wrong?

I'm not familiar with NuVal at all. It obviously makes a choice very quick, simple and dismisses doubt from the consumer. Whereas, traffic lights are only going to be truly useful for people who aren't colour-blind, and there is a bit more information to absorb. The trouble with the heart symbol is if it's there the consumer will buy, but if not, they may often tell themselves something like 'this product may not have been rated that's why it doesn't carry the heart symbol' and purchase that item anyway. Also, the 'enumbers' are also ignored in these rating systems. One ongoing issue is the amount of information, as the more packed ontoa small package, the smaller everything must be made to accomodate it all -- I can't read most ingredients and nutritional lists without a magnifier app, and sometimes the colour of the print is not contrasting enough from a coloured \ glossy background to be able to read it easilt anyway -- there needs to be serious attention paid to this issue.

Guys, This Beer Claims to Make You Better in the Bedroom | Eat This Not That

Just don’t count on a pint to increase your pleasure. A recent study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research found “little evidence” to support claims that ginseng acts as an aphrodisiac and male performance enhancer. Even if the ginseng did have an effect, it would have to be pretty strong to counter the actual alcohol in the beer. And at the steep price of £33 per 330mL (that’s less liquid than you’ll find in a can of Coke), the name “50 Shades of Green” feels more like a description of the price than the beer itself.

10 Ways to Train Like a Legend

When you  sleep  you're in an anabolic (muscle-building) state that's optimal for growth. “Your ultimate goal would be a quality night’s sleep between seven and nine hours,” says Kenn. “If you have a full work day ahead of you before you go to the gym, I would highly recommend a minimum of seven hours of sleep,” he adds. Whether you train in the morning, at night, or both, be sure to get some z's.

Are You Really Overtraining? (Or Just A Little Sore) - Born Fitness

If you’re concerned that you’re not recovering correctly, test your heart rate again. If your resting heart rate is significantly elevated, there’s a good chance you’re pushing too hard and need a break. Or, you can try HRV (such as the product by BioForce), which assesses your heart rate variability and provides biofeedback on your stress levels and recovery. It can indicate what days are best to push hard or back off. It’s new technology that makes it much easier to “listen to your body.”

Build More Muscle: 5 Ways to Sleep Stronger

Lifting a bunch of weight doesn’t guarantee  broad shoulders , flat abs, and powerful legs. That’s because hard training is merely the stress that forces your body to grow bigger and stronger. In fact, too much exercise without proper recovery can deter muscle gains.

38
Workout Finisher: Full Body Flush

Scared to leave the gym with a bit more gas left in the tank? The full body flush is the ultimate finisher to boost your metabolism and fully deplete each muscle at the end of any workout. The movements are simple, but both the intensity and reps completed will be high.

39
4 Moves to Increase Your Back Width

Wide grip pullups are absolutely essential to developing an impressively wide back. They are more lat intensive than their normal grip counterpart. To perform wide grip pullups grasp the pullup bar wider than shoulder width, and make sure to come all the way down on each rep. Use muscle intention to really feel your lats doing the work. Pull yourself all the way up so that the pullup bar is at around chest level. Do these strict (no swinging, go all the way down and all the way up.) Once you can do 10 strict wide grip pullups, start adding weight. Do 5 sets to failure in this exercise.

Is Wedding-Night Sex a Thing of the Past?

There are just a few things that get in the way—namely, men. Not to point fingers, but the reason 24% of couples fail to have wedding-night sex is because the groom is too drunk. Whether or not it means he’s mentally or physically incapable of doing the deed, it’s the top reason, so slow down on the Irish car bombs. That’s the purpose of bachelor parties anyway.

Finger Length Predicts Promiscuity in Men and Women

For this portion of the study, 1,314 British men and women volunteered their hands. Essentially, the 2D:4D ratio is based off the premise that the longer your ring finger is, the more likely you were exposed to a high concentration of testosterone in the womb. High testosterone levels have been linked to a higher likelihood of promiscuity.

What does it all mean? Well, get ready for a trip to the farmer’s market. Consuming 500 g (a little over a pound—yes a pound) of beets, radishes, or any leafy green vegetable, including lettuce, rocket, spinach, crown daisy, and swiss chard will provide enough nitrates for you to enjoy the benefits during your next workout. Yeah, it’s a lot of greens, but not that far from what you’ll find in many greens juices.

The 20 Best Forearm Exercises of All Time

Training your forearms serve two main purposes: increasing strength in other exercises (such as the deadlift) and making your upper body more symmetrical. Failing to train forearms results in less  grip strength and for some people, simply put, skinny-looking arms. Target this highly important body part with these 20 forearm exercises.

A Week’s Worth of Easy, Healthy Lunches

But packing a lunch for work doesn’t have to be time-consuming—and it doesn’t mean you have to eat the same thing every day. In fact, with less than an hour’s worth of prep this Sunday afternoon (pro tip: do it while you’re watching football), you’ll have everything you need to make five satisfying meals in seconds each morning. Just follow our three-step plan.

48
Take the Guesswork Out of Training

How many times have you caught yourself asking the question, “Which exercise should I do?” You get cranking on a good program, but still find yourself questioning why certain body parts just aren’t getting any better. You look around the gym and see a lot different exercises being performed and probably say to yourself, “Should I do that?” The better question should really be, “What am I trying to improve?” Exercises are created for a specific purpose, but when it comes to building size and getting razor-sharp cuts, that reason becomes even more important. Choosing the best exercise is difficult, since most exercises have variations and may activate more than one muscle or muscle group, making it difficult to pinpoint the true target. You also have to consider how to get all your body parts worked out inside of a week while ensuring that your overall goal is met.
