Eat more nuts to strengthen yours

Researchers from the University of Delaware discovered that eating walnuts may help alleviate that oxidative damage to sperm cells by providing extra PUFAs to boost sperm movement and structure. To be fair, the Delaware study looked at mice who ate a diet with almost 20% of calories coming from walnuts (or about 2.5 ounces for humans), not people. But that study is still built on older human and mice studies that showed similar results, suggesting the walnut-sperm bonus is built on some solid science.

There’s an old saying in fitness: Scientists eventually prove that the thing bodybuilders have been doing for 20 years actually works. This aphorism was proven true one more time when it comes to drinking peri-workout BCAAs. We already know that BCAAs (namely leucine) is a signaler for protein synthesis and that leucine and isoleucine can help stimulate fat-burning within muscle cells. However, a study published in the American Jour- nal of Physiology: Endocrinology and Metabolism found that when consumed before, during, and after a workout, BCAAs mitigated increases in two separate catabolic agents. In total, the subjects in the study consumed 85 milligrams of BCAAs per kilogram of bodyweight (a reasonable 6.8 grams for a 176-pound athlete). With almost no downside other than a very small amount of calories, a good BCAA formula can help you hold onto the gains you’ve sweated so hard for, especially during a cutting phase. There’s a ton of reasons to love Back Day. Unlike chest and shoulder workouts, pulling exercises don’t load any precarious ball-and-socket joints, so chance of injury in pulling exercises is nominal. And if you’re performing a machine-driven exercise such as a Hammer Strength row or lat pulldown, you can focus on the big prime movers since much of the stabilization requirements aren’t necessary. Best of all, you can hammer the muscles in your back and you won’t be wincing for a week every time you try to pick up your keys or shampoo your hair. That’s why so many bodybuilders and Physique athletes are able to hit their back twice a week.

First and foremost, this is not the most effective method of building mass and size, nor is it the best diet for losing crazy amounts of body fat. What this is, is a diet plan for someone looking to fuel their level of performance. That is, to intake the proper nutrition in the right quantity so that you can repair what’s been torn down, rest what has been exhausted, and continue to perform at the same, if not higher, level of output. So, in short, this is a “my body’s a machine and I need to fuel it properly” diet.

If you’re anything like me, when one program gets close to the end, you start scheming on the next one. You’re thinking of which muscle groups to hit on what days, what order to put the exercises in, and how to best work on your weak points to build the physique you want. Your legs are lagging, so you want to work them twice per week. Your arms are really good, so you put them after something else you need to work on. Something often overlooked when putting together your next program is how to factor in just how much your body can take based on how much volume and how much intensity you want to put into each workout. These are two key factors that will often make or break your progress. I’ve seen a lot of people doing way too much volume too intensely and being severely overtrained, as well as people thinking they can just pop in, do a low-volume/high-intensity routine and go home. The only problem is that they missed the memo about intensity and didn’t even break a sweat.

What's the minimum amount of exercise I can do and still see results?

So, fine: If you follow the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services’ recommendation to get at least 150 minutes of moderate (or 75 minutes of vigorous) aerobic activity a week, and pair that with a decent diet and adequate sleep, you won’t become morbidly obese. Or you can aim for 45 to 90 minutes a day, five to six days a week, with workouts that combine multijoint strength moves and high-intensity intervals (plus some steadystate cardio before or after), and eat clean food, drink lots of water, and shoot for eight hours of sleep a night, and see what those results look like. Your life, your choice!

Initial post there: So anyway, a bunch of stars have aligned to push me into just trying to get into shape above and beyond what I’ve done at this point in my life. Primarily the fact that I recently re-re-re-re injured a spinal erector. I have been focused on Olympic lifting and getting back into powerlifting, but it just isn’t going to happen anytime soon. I went and did a shoulder workout and worked on some jerks (something I still though I could do) but ended up with my back in knots from just jerking. So, with all ties to Olympic lifting and powerlifting currently severed, screw it, I want to get ripped. This coincided with my seasonal transition to evening workouts (where I have a little more time for volume) and morning fasting (where it’s easier to control my diet for cutting), so it kinda turns out perfect. I started back into bodybuilding style training about 2 weeks ago after not doing any for the past year+ so I’m still easing into the volume and intensity.

Chin ups, rows, and pulldowns need to become your new best friends. Put bench press and biceps curls on the back burner and focus on adding width to your upper body. A wide upper back will have much more impact on your presence than an overtrained chest will, also because all the back training will open up your shoulders and improve posture. The year 1896 was a very important milestone in the strength-training game because it marked the birth of weightlifting pioneer Mark Berry. Berry was very successful, winning a national championship in Olympic weightlifting and becoming the first ever Olympic Games Weightlifting Coach for the United States in 1932 and 1936. Berry’s legacy runs much deeper than that. He mentored John Grimek, who many consider to be the father of modern bodybuilding. Berry also immortalized his iron game legacy with the mighty pen, authoring numerous strength-training articles and mail-order courses. He was the first to preach squats for muscular bulk and development. To this day, Berry’s teachings help and inspire folks in the iron game. Hise Arrival One of Berry’s inspired pupils was J.C. Hise, who was an all-around bad-ass. Always working the toughest types of jobsin coal mines, uranium mills, cement mills, lumber stacking and as a hobby with the hope of striking it rich, searching out lost mines and attempting to stake his own claims. In the early 1930s, Hise started barbell training.
