Arnold Schwarzenegger Undergoes Emergency Heart Surgery

This is not the first time Arnold has gone under the knife for heart surgery. He had an aortic valve replaced in 1997. At the time doctors didn't feel the procedure was urgently needed, but Arnold decided to do it while he was still young. He also said at the time the condition was congenital and had nothing to do with steroids.

Unstable loading produced far greater core activation at the same level of submaximal loading. An increase of 85.7% in the rectus abdominis and 13.1% in the external oblique was seen. Also, a 72.2% increase in muscle activation in the soleus (the calf muscle used for balance and stability along with plantarflexion) was observed in the unstable loading trial.

But it's quite possible that muscles that are generally considered fast or slow might be the opposite for you. If this is the case, you'll probably know quickly. For example, a muscle is likely fast-twitch dominant if you're explosively strong when training it, but find your ability to perform higher-rep sets with it is poor. These fast-twitch muscles will also take longer to recover than other muscles.

(Dorsiflexion occurs when you pull your toes up toward your shin.) If your shin can't tilt forward enough then you may flex excessively at the hips and/or spine in an effort to get to the depth you want. That may mean back pain and/or a weak squat position. One solution is to wear weightlifting shoes. The raised heel reduces the demand for dorsiflexion when squatting. But I argue that you should fix yourself. Why not have a fully functioning body?

A new study from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, just proved that the Holy Grail of Fitness—losing fat while you build muscle—is possible. The bad news is it’s really hard. Researchers took two groups of young fit men and put them on strict meal plans for four weeks (all calories were carefully controlled throughout the study) that totaled 40 percent fewer calories than they needed to maintain their bodyweight. One group received a high-protein diet (about one gram per pound of bodyweight), and the other group was given half that amount of protein.
