Body-Part Splits Are Dead | T Nation

Lifting weights is a skill, a skill that only gets better with practice. Ask any world-class pianist, ballerina, or artist, and they would agree: You can't just show up once a week and expect to perfect your craft. Yet by working each muscle only once a week, as with a body-part split, that's exactly what you're doing. On the flip side, by increasing frequency, you give yourself more opportunities to practice.

3
Tip: Supercharge GH Production | T Nation

While both groups showed a GH response, the group that finished their workout with a high-rep "finisher" experienced a greater GH response during the 60 minutes immediately following the workout. The high-GH group also showed greater increases in strength (greater improvement in their 1RM) and greater growth of their leg muscles than the group that didn't finish off with a high-rep set.

4
Tip: The Right Way to Lift for Fat Loss | T Nation

Most serious dieting has its roots in the kitchen, i.e., body fat is better controlled through diet than exercise. However, we're forgetting about EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. Certain forms of exercise cause you to burn more calories after you QUIT working out and, when combined with dieting, can lead to appreciable fat loss.

4 Tests Every Lifter Should Be Able to Pass | T Nation

If you have to cheat to do all eight reps, you can either continue hitting biceps and triceps, gravitating towards inherently easy lifts, or you can set your ego aside and work on getting strong in the compound lifts. Choose the latter and you'll be surprised by the type of full body strength you'll be able to develop. Chances are, in the process, you'll also build bigger biceps, triceps, and forearms than you ever did doing dumbbell curls.

White vs. Dark Meat for Bodybuilders

Are you trying to cut calories or carbs? Neither white nor dark meat contains any carbs. When you’re dieting you need saturated fats to improve satiety and support hormone production. We’ve been beating the drum, encouraging bodybuilders to emphasize saturated fats for boosting hormones such as testosterone while also suggesting that they supplement omega-3s because they’re vastly underrepresented in American and even bodybuilding diets. Therefore, bodybuilders should focus on quality cuts of organic chicken rather than worrying about white or dark meat. Hard-gainers and those seeking to add mass can also consume the skin, which is almost all fat, if they’re partial to it.

Training Mistakes Part 2

For squatting and deadlifting, the glutes, hamstrings, and hips are the most important. Reverse hypers, glute-hams, inverse curls, leg curls of all types should be included, but the lifter must never forget the abs! The abs must start every lift. That is why the lifter should take a deep breath before starting the bench or standing press, squat, or pull.

Tip: 10 Spices That Help You Live Longer | T Nation

Garlic is like an insurance policy. It protects you against the common cold and other sicknesses, and enhances the overall health of your gastrointestinal tract where disease starts. A regular dose of garlic keeps things balanced in your gut by killing yeast and pathogenic bacteria, and feeding the beneficial microbes that help keep us lean and healthy. Onions and shallots do the same, but what sets garlic apart is its allicin content. Allicin is a compound that's only released when the garlic cloves are chopped or crushed, so consume it fresh when possible.

Tip: Two Ways to Build a Lagging Muscle | T Nation

Up until then, I'd never gone over 8 reps and was always fairly strong, but my quads refused to grow. So I made a rule: for a whole 6 weeks there would be no set under 15 reps in my sessions. Some of those were drop sets, extended, or giant sets. Some were upwards of 50-100 reps. The puke bucket was always nearby. My quads, however, grew more than they had in the two years prior.

6 Perfect Muscle-Building Meals

700 calories, 60 g protein, 83 g carbs, 13 g fat Why? For muscle-building, there'’s nothing like beef -— it contains creatine, all the necessary aminos and a full spectrum of B vitamins, and it'’s dense in iron to assist in energy production. Pasta provides carbs, which are essential for energy, and broccoli yields compounds that help with fat control. Hardgainer Tip: Choose lean, not extra-lean, beef (around 10%-–15% fat as opposed to under 10%). The extra fat and calories spare the burning of glycogen and protein for greater growth. Shredding Tip: Temper your lunchtime carb intake: Eat just 1 cup of pasta but double up on the broccoli -— low in calories, high in fiber -— to control calories and your feelings of hunger.

It's true that resveratrol may extend life because it's been shown to have positive effects on blood vessel and joint health, along with positive effects on insulin and estrogen levels. It even fights cancer and repairs DNA. However, according to research conducted by Italian scientists, resveratrol may be even more valuable than we thought because it also seems to speed up muscle growth.

16
Tip: Prepare Your Hamstrings for Sprinting | T Nation

If you want to add sprinting to your training program, start by building up the eccentric strength of your hamstrings. Beginning at least six weeks before you plan to start sprinting, program two-up one-down leg curls and either the accentuated eccentric GHR or the Nordic ham curl at least twice a week. If you're already sprinting, you should still add these exercises to your program as a preventative tool.

It's really a very simple movement. Get a big bucket and fill it with rice. I've also seen rubber chips, metal shot, and sand used. The metal shot is hardcore and should only be used by those with a very strong grip to begin with. Rice is your best bet as it's the easiest to use and you can always progress up to the sand from there.

Three 15-Minute Muscle-Building Workouts

Choose a weight that’s roughly your 20 rep max and start with sets of ten. This may seem easy, but remember that you’re doing this for 15 minutes with as little rest as possible so you’ll definitely feel the lactic acid building. When you’re done with one set, move right into the exercise for the opposing body part, and continue in this manner until the time is up. The key is to count the total reps done within that time frame and then increase it the next week. In this manner you’re constantly improving, which is the key to building muscle .

5 ways to cut sugar out of your diet

Take white and brown sugar out of your kitchen, or throw them away altogether, Mazur says. Your taste buds will adapt to coffee and tea without added sugar, and slowly you'll stop craving it. Some of the most commonly eaten foods are latent sugar bombs. Take a look at this list of surprisingly sugar-rich eats .

Tip: 7 Challenging New Ways to Build Your Chest | T Nation

Another way to challenge the chest is to not fully complete the range of motion. This keeps a high amount of tension on the pecs and it makes the movement less stable. When the hands are brought all the way together, the straps also pull all the way up against the arms, providing stability. Keeping the hands away from the mid-line keeps the straps off the arms, requiring the shoulder joint to keep stable on its own.

The 9 best fitness trackers and smartwatches of 2017

There's no denying that a lot of fitness trackers and smartwatches put functionality before looks, but with the Withings Steel HR, beauty, brains, and brawn go hand in hand. The Steel HR is a traditional analog watch that includes an activity dial and a small digital screen that tracks heart rate. This minimalist approach has its benefits, as the Steel HR's battery lasts up to 25 days (as opposed to many other smartwatches, which only survive for a day or two without a recharge). It's also water resistant up to 50 meters and syncs automatically with Withings' iOS/Android apps. ($199.99, withings.com)

5 Ways To Be Stronger Today

Sure, we recommend a high-protein, low-carb diet as the best way to get lean but if strength is your main concern, then carbs are a huge part of your game plan. In this case, most of your carbs should be coming from slow-digesting sources like sweet potatoes, brown rice and other whole-grain products. The key to having more strength for today's workout is to make sure that you have a larger complex carbohydrate serving an hour before your workout - aim for 60-100 grams - along with 40 grams of whey protein. These carbs, Gunter says, will help you sustain your energy for the heavy work ahead. Skip this carb serving and you could find your workout losing steam midway through.

10 upper-body moves that build your core

By placing a barbell in a landmine, the bar becomes a lever and moves in an arc. This is a great alternative for people with shoulder issues because they don't have to press directly overhead. Also, by getting on just one knee, you’ll spike your core activation because of the instability challenge. If you don’t have a landmine, just stick one end of a barbell into a steady corner.

Melvin Anthony Serving 10-Year Prison Sentence

Former IFBB pro bodybuilder Melvin Anthony was arrested on January 13 in Harrison County, Mississippi, and charged with delivery of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. (A source tells us the controlled substance was the drug ecstasy, but this has not been confirmed.) He plead guilty to the first two charges and was sentenced on January 19 to two concurrent 10-year sentences. Anthony, who was born in 1969 (not 1973, as he previously claimed), is currently imprisoned in the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility with a tentative release date of January 7, 2027.

4 Moves for Ripped Lower Abs

The collection of movements below accomplishes this quite nicely, starting with two movements that target your lower abs, followed by some oblique work, and a core-stabilization finisher. And since it’s impossible to train one portion of the rectus abdominis—your six-pack muscles—apart from another, your upper abs will get plenty of work, too, in this routine.

Muscle in Minutes: Shoulders

Building well-capped shoulders , some would say, takes years and years of heavy pressing and experimentation. Those folks aren’t entirely wrong but it’s not exactly what you want to hear if you’re already behind the curve in this department. By training your delts with a simple, exercise-minimal routine, twice per week, you can start to make up ground on the lifetime pressers pretty quickly. Delts are fast to respond to proper overload and they can handle a reasonable amount of volume. So even if you can’t overhead press 250 pounds for 3-4 reps, you can still reap some appreciable gains from a more conservative press-first approach.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Training Tips

While Arnold did conventional exercises, his training strategy was anything but. He approached leg days with an extraordinary tolerance for pain and dedication to push his body past its physical limits. Boost Your Testosterone on a Vegan Diet

Let's dispel a myth about soy, as it is one of the most commonly used protein source amongst vegans and it does contain estrogen-like compounds. Ph.D. and Mark Messina, Ph.D. concluded that 'neither soy foods nor isoflavone supplements alter measures of bioavailable T concentrations in men.

Carb Control

This means that a 150-pounder should get in 300 grams of carbs, and a 200-pound lean bodybuilder should take in about 400. But that doesn’t mean you can take in any carb you want at any time of day. Look at the following tips for guidance on which carbs to consume and when.

7 Exercises to Blow Up Your Arms

Sasan Heirati is looking to make a huge impression in the IFBB pro ranks, and one thing is certain—Heirati is unlikely to be let down by his arms. At 22 and 21 inches (the right one is slightly bigger than the left), they’re not lacking size, but, as always with Heirati, it’s about the quality rather than just mass. However, he wasn’t born with impressive pipes. “When I started bodybuilding at 14, I didn’t have good arms, but they grew quickly,” he says.
