Never Eat This Before You Go to Bed

Need a snack before turning in for the night? Steer clear of cheat foods like ice cream or cookies if you’re hitting the gym in the morning. A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that eating foods that are low in fiber and high in saturated fat and sugar can make for a worse night’s sleep. Subjects who had more high-fiber foods throughout the day, on the other hand, spent more time in restorative slow-wave sleep stages.

Crunches vs. Core Exercises

So keep doing crunches. There are only two times of day when there’s a slight chance they could hurt your back. First, because your disks absorb fluid while you sleep, the pressure inside them when you wake is about 250% higher than before going to bed, thus increasing bending stresses at the disks by about 300%. As the day goes on, the disks become more elastic and flexible. So, if you train first thing in the morning, do your ab work at the end and at least one hour after waking up. Second, when you sit for a prolonged amount of time, disks gain height and decrease lumbar range of motion, which can increase the risk of injury. So if you sit at a desk all day and then drive to the gym, do not train abs as soon as you get there. Do a warm-up on a treadmill for 5 or 10 minutes or train abs last. – FLEX

Big On Rest

Resting less (about 1 minute) between sets has been shown to lead to bigger boosts in growth hormone and testosterone, but resting longer keeps your strength up during training. But did either method boost muscle size more than the other? A recent study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research had untrained male subjects follow a 10-week weight-training program with rest periods between sets of either 1 minute or 2.5 minutes. The scientists measured the subjects’ arm sizes before and after the 10 weeks to determine which program resulted in greater gains in muscle size.

Six Deadly Diet Sins

Solution: During bodyfat reducing phases, try a four-on/one-off approach. Diet strictly for four days, eating 1 g of carbs per pound of bodyweight daily and taking in no carbs at each day'’s final meal. On the fifth day, take a break from dieting. Dramatically increase carb intake, up to as much as 3 grams per pound of bodyweight on that day. Chest Chiseler Workout

Know what build’s a great chest? A FULL RANGE OF MOTION. So on the dips, make sure the biceps touches the forearm. Also with dips you can stay upright and still hit the chest very hard—you don't have to lean forward like most trainers say you do. On all exercises, use a three-second negative or before moving the weight or your body as quickly as possible during each contraction. This will recruit the optimal Type II muscle fibers. Remember, it's not the velocity of the bar as much as it is the brain's intent to move the object. So if you are contracting the muscle as hard as you possibly can—even if the weight is moving slowly—you still will recruit those growth-prone fibers. Most trainers oppose Swiss ball training but I still think it's a tough move and very functional. The prowler sled push is an amazing finishing move for the chest. Simply get low to the sled with your hands near your chest and push the sled with your arms rather than your legs. Take a step forward and repeat. But my corrective exercise background led me to include the doorway stretch. Many guys already have postural problems.

Does Tribulus Boost Testosterone?

Tribulus is an herb that it commonly found in over-the-counter testosterone products. Without stereotyping, it’s popular with the bodybuilding community. This led me to design a scientific study 7 years ago, in which I helped two researchers put together a (never published) review on tribulus use and the impact on strength, muscle gain, and testosterone levels. I’ll be honest and admit that the research wasn’t air tight (hence the lack of publishing) and the sample size was small (n=16), but the findings were still relevant. The bottom line: Compared to a placebo group, there was no difference after 16 weeks of supplementation, which was a long enough trial period where you would expect to see something. And trust me, we looked. (Side note: ANOVAs, ANCOVAs, and multi-variate analyses are things I do not miss at all. If you’re a stats nerd you get this and probably also enjoy these things more than I ever could. And that’s a big reason why I left the research side of academia.)
