Tip: One Hard Set, 80 Percent of the Gains | T Nation

In gym-practice, this simply means that doing one hard set provides roughly 80% of the benefit of 3-4 sets (give or take). Put another way, we're talking about the law of diminishing returns. Yes, each additional set leads to more benefit, but those benefits dwindle significantly with each new set.

This Workout Tweak Will Change Everything in the Gym

It’s crucial to exercise in all three planes of motion because focusing on only one will, over time, create muscle imbalances. For example, most daily workout routines primarily occur in the sagittal plane with exercises like running, bicep curls, and traditional sit-ups. Over time, this routine will overwork the hip flexors, which in turn shuts down the glutes and abs. It’s important to note that sitting also occurs in the sagittal plane. So in this case, you would go from a static sagittal plane motion in sitting all day to a dynamic sagittal plane motion in going for a run. By adding in some exercises that occur in the frontal and transverse planes, you would create a more balanced, total-body workout. This will both prevent injury down the line and help you reach your fitness goals.

A lot of coaches try to get people's hips or knees to do this or that, all the while ignoring that if the ankles aren't moving properly, the knees and hips can't move properly for efficient load distribution. For the hips to open up, you have to have adequate hip abduction. The knees should move out to the side when that happens very naturally. However, if the ankles are pronating and not supinating, then none of that will ever happen.

Rather, balance ability was found to significantly correlate with rifle shooting accuracy, archery shooting accuracy, ice hockey maximum skating speed, and simulated luge start speed. It was also linked with improvements in vertical jump, shuttle run speed, and overall agility. The lateral hip is also a commonly neglected area of self-treatment, as the glutes and hip flexors get all the attention since they're larger, better known muscles of the body. The smaller muscles of the lateral hip – largely the tensor fascia lata, the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus – surround two key nerves, the superior and inferior gluteal nerves. To access these areas, you'll also be addressing the gluteus maximus which attaches onto the lateral hip as well.
