An Unusual $100,000 Birthday Present (Plus: Free Round-Trip Anywhere in the World) | The Blog of Author Tim Ferriss

Anyway, I’ve been down with the four hour work week, it’s a contemporary solution to contemporary baloney that keeps us undermining our lives and capabilities, and I feel is a wonderful supplement to Think and Grow Rich. Of course it is not without reason that I have been compelled to write a post for the first time here and now on the blog. I want to give it up to Tim for all the insight and efficient pathways to creating my plan to freedom, and without question I feel in my being our paths will cross. Ironically I have felt this way with My gratitude behind all of the learned body maintainence I’ve learned from Kelly Starrett’s teachings, and if anyone has not yet realized their value, you will feel every ounce of it by putting it to practice. As an athlete, entrepreneur, inventor, musician, and limitless person, I was most excited once I saw Tim teaming up with Kelly in the 4 Hour Body and other podcasts. It was a meeting of minds I had not anticipated, and I have to render the gratitude I have for them. I am completely down with the standing desk elementary school that they are working to achieve, and once I get my wheels rollin’, I don’t see why I wouldnt donate the whole amount. I was so pumped up by just learning about posture that I started standing at my normal desk, propped my keyboard up like a foot with cardboard boxes, tilted my monitor up, and turned enough heads, got laughed at enough, that my company owner came up to me asking what the deal was. I told him I refused to sit any longer, and he then bought me a standing desk. It’s funny how the drive I got to be my best self was rewarded and overhauled by my persistence in knowing what I truly wanted. And I truly want this for all people, including the kids. Habits make us or break us, and I don’t enjoy the evolutionary picture you can google where modern man is sitting in front of a computer. I am driven to give this publicity because my philosophy on a grand scale is that if I can save people even one hour a year, and have it be so wide spread, then I can save people billions of hours, and I will work toward that goal to receive a humble return from that fact. I admire Tim for all the work he has put in, saving my life countless hours, and hopefully a countless amount of people’s lives have felt that too. Happy Birthday!

Sagittarius Horoscope for Wednesday, June 17, 2015

Wednesday, June 17, 2015 - Sometimes keeping your most amazing ideas under wraps is the best path to making your dreams come true. You are continuing to ride several days of exciting cosmic waves, yet you could spoil your chances for success if you reveal too much about your plans. Instead of talking about your ideas with anyone who will listen, focus on putting the details into place first. Although you often get away with developing your strategy on the fly, a more cautious approach now works to your advantage.

Giant Gains with Giant Sets

For your goals, here’s a program of six giant sets arranged in a three-day split. I recommend you train three days in a row, take one or two days’ rest, and then repeat this sequence until you have performed all the workouts four or five times each. The tempo for every exercise except where noted is 4010 (4 seconds eccentric, no rest, 10 seconds concentric). The first day of the program focuses on arms, the second day on legs, and the third day on chest and back.

Phil Heath on Bringing Up Your Legs

The key is learning how to focus your exercises on the targeted muscles. So you may need to squat less weight in order to focus enough tension on your legs. This year I did 20 reps in every set of squats. Of course, I was using less weight than if I’d been doing 10 reps; but the intensity was of the hook. Try pushing every set of squats to 20 and you’ll know that higher reps are the hard way, not the easy way.

The Perfect Number of Sets for Weight Lifting

For six months, Brazilian Navy cadets took a break from regular boot camp workouts to conduct a weight-training experiment, doing either one, three, or five sets per exercise, and tracking strength gains. Result: The five-setters earned significantly more muscle mass than the other two groups, and upped their five-rep max more as well, The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research reports. The findings back the “five sets/five reps” model that trainer Don Saladino, co-owner of NYC’s Drive495 gym, uses for big lifts like the bench press and squat. But for unilateral movements like side lunges and one-legged squats, do just two to three sets, to promote athleticism, he says: “You aren’t doing it to build muscle mass.”

And the Pussification of America Continues – Lincoln Sudbury Baseball Coach Fired After 14 Years Because A Couple Parents Issued Anonymous Complaints To the New AD

PATHETIC.   No other way to put it.  This is everything that is wrong with everything.   Unfortunately it’s the same reason virtually every high school coach gets fired nowadays in America. It has nothing to do with winning or being a good coach. It doesn’t matter that he went 269-68, won 12 league titles and 3 state championships.  It’s because some kids parents complained about playing time. That’s it. That’s what leads to a coaches demise 100% of the time. It’s the pussification of America at it’s finest. If Little Johnny doesn’t get to be a star you complain till the coach gets fired. Who cares that this guy has 3 state titles and is one of the best coaches in the state? As long as Little Johnny gets his varsity letter that’s all that matters.  And the worst part is these parents don’t even have the balls to complain face to face like a man.  They can just issue anonymous complaints and get a coach fired.  It’s rewarding people for being cowards.  Firing people with no explanation or chance to defend themselves.  Seriously how does this prepare kids for the real world?  What’s gonna happen when Little Johnny doesn’t get a job or a raise? Is Mommy and Daddy just going to anonymously complain to HR?  The whole thing makes me want to puke.

9 Common Training Mistakes That Ruin Gains

Nobody gets it right all the time. If that were the case, we’d all be sporting Olympia-contending physiques and chasing down supplement contracts. Bodybuilding is such an individual pursuit — one where success is built on more trial and error than we sometimes care to admit. But one of the best ways to achieve results the fastest isn’t to ensure you’re getting everything right but rather to evaluate what you may be doing wrong. The following list represents nine of the most common training and dietary mistakes that people make as they work to build lean muscle and torch more bodyfat. 1. Skipping Breakfast Wake up. Shower. Shave. Get dressed. If you’re lucky, you get to grab some coffee before sprinting to your car and diving headlong into your morning commute. But if you haven’t eaten, you won’t be taking a trip to Gainsville. For one, studies have shown that those who skip breakfast are much more likely to overeat later in the day. Also, for every minute you run on empty after waking up, your body is cannibalizing your muscles for energy, which it needs to fuel basic activities, and it’ll take it from somewhere, even your muscles.

18
Bulk Up Without Getting a Belly

When it comes to revealing ripped muscles, diet is key. You can put up heavy weight all day, but optimal gains won’t happen without a focused nutrition plan. For starters, you need to take in more calories than you're burning each day, which puts most guys in the 2,000- to 2,500-calorie range. But those cals can't just come from anywhere. Juan Carlos Santana, M.Ed.,C.S.C.S., C.P.T.S., founder of The Institute of Human Performance , says to get those calories from protein such as lean chicken and beef (35%), healthy fats such as olive oil (30%), and clean carbs such as sprouted grains, sweet potatoes, or broccoli (35%). “Once you build the foundation of clean eating for good fitness and health, you may want to take it to another level that you can’t reach with just food,” says Santana. “To do this, you can add clean supplements to this diet." 10 Ways to Build Muscle Faster>>>

The Facts About Sugar in Smoothies and Juices

And since the average American isn’t eating nearly as many fruits and vegetables as she should, I recommend consuming two to four servings of fruit and three to five servings of vegetables each day (the USDA recommendation) in whatever nutritious ways you can. And if that means fruit juice and smoothies, go for it—just be picky about your ingredients.

20
Increase Your Bench Press

This may seem like an odd workout to improve your bench press because there are no bench presses in it! Its primary purpose is to create structural balance. If all your muscles are not in balance, the opposing muscles (antagonists) could shut down. That’s why a trainee who has an extreme case of structural imbalance but corrects it could increase their bench press without performing any bench presses!

The Sleeveless T-Shirt Workout

We brought you the t-shirt workout to help you carve the perfect torso. Now, we're going one step further by bringing you the sleeveless t-shirt workout. This routine was designed to target the key muscles of your upper body that must look good if you're going to dare go sleeveless: your biceps, delts, shoulders, and upper back. "Inverting the body with the Handstand Pushup, then having the arms go to pre-exhaustion fills the arms with blood, priming them for a great pump with the barbell curls," says Rolando Garcia, E at Equinox Manager who programmed this routine. "Anybody can make a bicep look impressive when they curl their arm, but to have impressive arms even when they are straight by your side means that you have been doing the right, full body exercises," says Garcia who notes that the Barbell Curl is one of the best moves for accomplishing this goal. "Go as heavy as possible on these, but keep very good form," he notes.

22
Everything You Should Know About the Alkaline Diet

The good thing about the alkaline diet is the foods that are supposed to help alkaline your body are great for you. The typical American diet contains many foods that are considered "acidifying". These foods include; meat, dairy, corn, wheat and many other processed foods. The standard American diet does not include enough alkaline foods to balance this out. Foods recommended to be eaten with this diet are; a wide array of fruits and vegetables, while avoiding processed foods. This aspect of the diet I really like. It emphasizes the importance of whole foods and getting in a lot of micronutrients.

9 Ways to Max Out Your Treadmill Workout

Mix It Up Take advantage of the stationary benefit: running on a treadmill puts heart rate and pace stats at your fingertips, giving you ultimate control over effort and speed. Try an anything goes workout: increase your incline for the first interval, then activate the quads, calves, and hamstrings with a decline descent. Close with a challenging incline run that picks up the pace. “If someone runs at 1% incline and another person mixes it up—and runs on a 1%-3% incline on hilly terrain—the person who’s running hills is probably going to have more fun and get in a better workout,” says Jenny Hadfield, running coach and author of Running for Mortals: A Commonsense Plan for Changing Your Life with Running . Don’t feel like overthinking? Use the treadmill’s constant momentum as motivation to run a low-level hill program or an interval workout. Create Flow Don’t go all out. “It’s one thing to push yourself to extremes, but you can actually get a better workout by tuning into what’s happening to your body during the day,” says Hadfield.

Big Louie

Today, at age 62, this 1973 IFBB Mr. America and two-time IFBB Universe winner (1973–1974), is a quiet, thoughtful, introspective man. Thanks to his enormous physique and run as CBS’ The Hulk from 1977–1981, Lou Ferrigno is one of two bodybuilders who are truly household names (Arnold Schwarzenegger being the obvious other). He still works out and his acting career continues with work on The Celebrity Apprentice and The King of Queens, as well as voice-over work in Adventure Time and 2012’s blockbuster movie The Avengers. A family man, Lou and his wife of 34 years, Carla, have three grown children and live in California, where they held this November’s NPC and IFBB Ferrigno Legacy Contest.

3 Tricks to Fire Up Your Cutting Season

Have you ever thought the layout of your grocery store could influence the way you shop? Well it does, and you spend about six minutes less in the healthy sections like the produce section. One of Dr. Wansinks’s many studies took place in a grocery store in Washington D.C. where he observed how people grocery shop. He found that people go through the produce aisle and then make their way to Aisle 2. But once the shoppers leave Aisle 2, they start to skip aisles and search for whatever they may need. The result he says, “Aisle 2 gets the most love.” That’s because Aisle 2 typically contains the junk food. “First in sight is first in cart.” Lesson learned here, don’t just aimlessly wander through the store, put more time and effort into going towards the healthier aisles.

The Ultimate Lat Workout for a Bigger Back

This is perhaps the most prevalent problem in faulty back training and the number one reason, in my opinion, that spectacular back development is so rare. Usually one or all of the following mistakes are made by most when training back...1) Too much weight is used! Stop swinging and jerking and control the exercise throughout the entire ROM, 2) Failure to “set the body” correctly during the movement! Keep your chest out, shoulders back, and a slight arch in your lower back...and you must keep this position throughout the movement, 3) Not using a thumbless grip! By bringing your thumb to the same side of the bar as the rest of your fingers you will effectively take some of the forearm flexors and biceps out of each lat exercise. Reinforce your grip with lifting straps if you must.

Train Like an Olympic Sprinter

Since we were kids, the fictious lives of superheros made us wonder what it would be like to have their powers. Even now we see them on the silver screen being bigger, stronger and faster than the average human. Today's athletes have evolved so much that they seem to actually possess these super-human qualities. If you ever wondered what it would be like to train for superhero strength and ability, take a look at the life of an Olympic Sprinter.

3-Day Ab Workout for a Shredded Six-Pack

That’s it. Designing your core workouts with exercises that fit these categories is all you’ll ever need to build strong abs and an injury-resistant lower back. They can be used as a single progression—one month you could focus only on pure stabilization, work on dynamic movements the next month, and then finally do integrated stabilization exercises the month after—or as a separate focus on each of your training days. I recommend doing all core exercises, except the ones in the integrated stabilization category, first in your workouts, before you train other muscle groups.

Universal Nutrition Animal Whey at Bodybuilding.com

An impressive Supplement Facts box wouldn't be enough, however, it would have to live up to hype in the field—on the weight room floors of the most hardcore gyms in the world... In the shaker cups and blenders of the most committed lifters out there. It would have to mix with ease and taste great, making drinking multiple shakes per day a pleasure, not a painful chore. Because let's face it, if your protein powder tastes like shit, it is less likely you will drink it as much as needed to hit your daily macronutrient goals. Unacceptable. To be worthy of the Animal aegis, it would have to taste as good as it worked. And once again, in this regard, Animal WHEY is a triumph.

9 Dumb Things Not to Do on a First Date

One thing I’ve noticed across over 10,000 clients is that dates are actually the worst place to screw things up. If you mess up when you first approach a woman, you’ve lost 15 seconds and maybe bruised your ego. If things don’t go well on a date, you’ve lost the time and money from the date itself, from the first time you met her, and all of the phoning and texting in between. Fail early, not late. To that end, I’d like to share these nine dumb things not to do on a first date. These tips won’t get you the girl on their own, but they’ll stop you from sinking your own ship unnecessarily. 7 Traits That Turn Off Any Woman>>>

7 Bodybuilding Tips for Guys Over 30

The sport of competitive bodybuilding is a game of adapting our training and diet to manipulate our physical appearance. As our bodies approach age 40 and beyond, there is inevitable muscle loss that will occur. Coupled together with the possibility of decreased testosterone production and ailing joints, there are a few things to consider when competing into your 30s and beyond. The following are a few important things to remember for ALL bodybuilders, but particularly those of us who have arrived at, or even passed through the 30 mark.

Pausing Your Reps = Bench Press Power Gains

The sticking point is your weakest link in a lift - the point where you tend to fail. To gain strength, you need to train at your sticking points. Since most of us have trouble a few inches off our chest, the floor press is an ideal solution. Training to recruit more pec fibers in this spot will have you blowing through it instead of sticking.

The FDA Bans Trans Fat

The Grocery Manufacturers Association is pleased about the news, "The FDA acted in a manner that addresses FDA's concerns and minimizes unnecessary disruptions to commerce." However, the FDA is giving food companies one way to use trans fat in small amounts -- ultimatelly filing a petition for its specific use in a product. Trans fat is usually added to products to improve taste and allow products to keep a longer shelf life. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says that trans fat is the leading cause for 50,000 fatal heart attacks each year.

Don't Short Your Muscle Gains

At the end of eight weeks, significant post-training differences existed in strength, muscle mass, and subcutaneous fat, with the long-range group exhibiting greater adaptations than the short-range group. Detraining resulted in significant deteriorations in all muscle parameters in both groups, with the short-range group experiencing a more rapid relative loss of post-exercise increases in strength than that of the long-range group. Greater morphological and architectural resistance training adaptations in the long-range (owing to higher mechanical stress) resulted in a more significant increase in strength compared with that of the short-range.
