Tip: Reps & Techniques for Size Gains | T Nation

This is a great way to get a good pump and build muscle on the heels of your strength training. In fact, one recent study found that when you perform an exercise to failure with loads of 30% of your 1 rep max (very light, 20+ reps) it's nearly as effective as using loads of 80% of your 1 rep max. So when you train isolated muscle groups, do the exercise until you can't do it any longer. You'll get the pump of your life.

So if you hit 245 x 8 on bench press, then did flat flyes with the 40's for 10, don't expect to come back and hit 245 x 8 or more on the second superset. You could stick with the 245 and bang out what you can, or you can drop the weight for the second superset and focus on a target rep range. There's no hard and fast rule with that.

My Five Essential Supplements

The typical American diet results in an estimated omega-6 to omega-3 ratio of 20 to 1 or 30 to 1. Such large consumption of omega-6 fatty acids is part of the inflammation epidemic plaguing Americans with heart disease and other chronic ailments. Uncontrolled blood sugar from overconsumption of carbohydrates and more specifically sugar is also at the root of chronic inflammation and disease. Consumption of fish oil can lead to a more healthful ratio of omega fatty acids, which mitigates inflammation. The target is a one-to-one ratio of omega-6 to omega-3. Avoidance of all vegetable-derived oils is a good place to start when seeking to lower omega-6 consumption. Minimize all consumption of factory farmed or Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), which are a disaster for the environment and our health. Grass-fed organic beef has also been found to possess a healthier ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. Fish oil also stokes mitochondrial activity (the engine for cellular activity), leading to improving body composition. Supplementing during meals aids insulin sensitivity and leptin release.

The elastic band makes it easier at the bottom part of the movement, giving you a little spring to get yourself started. If you're a long ways off from doing a chin-up, start with a thick elastic band for more assistance and move down to a thinner band for less assistance as you progress. Also, make sure you're going "down and through" during the descent. More on this technique later.

Safety Squat Bar Squats — If you have one of these bars then start using it. It's one of the best ways to build the muscles that squat and deadlift. The reason for this is the bar is trying to toss you forward and you have to fight to keep it in a good path. It also takes the weight off your shoulders as you don't have to hold the bar as you would a regular squat bar. You'll hold this bar by the front yokes. Don't hold onto the rack and pull yourself up, either. If you don't have one of these bars, then try to do anything you can to change the center of gravity of the movement. This can be done a number of different ways. You can use what's called a Manta Ray that snaps onto the bar; you can do high bar squats; or you can wrap a thick towel around the bar so it'll sit higher on the back. Each of these will all work the body differently.

Enduring physical punishment has always been a central element in Mr. Johnson’s body of work. Still, he outdoes himself here. Will arrives in Hong Kong minus a leg he lost to previous action. (In one of the best of the movie’s sight gags, his prosthesis proves to be a multipurpose appliance.) Then, fingered as the villain in an elaborate plot he can’t possibly understand—a Hitchcockian setup for a movie connected to the master only by vertigo—he takes a sensational leap of faith from a construction crane; is battered, bruised, burned and almost basted; functions as a human fly on a building that out-phalluses the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai tower in “Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol,” and triumphs in a clever, op-arty climax that is literally all smoke and mirrors. (The film was written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who directed “Central Intelligence,” which co-starred Mr. Johnson and Kevin Hart; “We’re the Millers”; and the superbly silly “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story,” which was his directorial debut.)
