5 Mental Tricks for Better Workout Results

“Light weight,” eight-time Mr. Olympia Ronnie Coleman says as he settles under a bar for a max-rep set of bench presses at 495 pounds. Little verbal cues like this represent the tip of the iceberg for what people have used to help them get through tough workouts. The brain is willing, after all, even if the flesh is weak. Our panel of experts chipped in on some of the psyche ups that they use to push the envelope in the gym.

Muscle Protein Synthesis Gets You Bigger and Stronger

Protein synthesis, in general, is removing or repairing damaged proteins and building new proteins that are replicas of the original. The new proteins are stronger, more dense, and able to handle stress better than before. Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is the rebuilding of muscle tissue and it occurs as a result of the stresses that we place on our body, whether it is to repair injury (such as a muscle tear) or because we intentionally try to damage it (microtrauma from training). The exact process is still under considerable scrutiny, however, one thing is certain: it occurs immediately upon stress. The second you begin to exercise, MPS activates and begins to repair muscles. Usually, protein synthesis is said to occur overnight, the next day, etc., but the truth is that it starts right away and may go on for as long as 48 hours at a single damaged site before it is repaired.

10 Ways to Lose Muscle

6.YOU ONLY EAT SPORADICALLY It’s true: Eating infrequently is nearly as bad as not eating at all. When you go more than three hours without food, your metabolism slows significantly. When that happens, every time you do get a meal, there’s a good chance that a large percentage of it will be stored as fat. Why? Blame your body. Without food, it slips back into starvation mode and starts to think it needs to hold on to every calorie it can get.

Perfect Timing: The Best Watch for Every Occasion

The last time a timepiece was created for the sole purpose of watching the hours pass by, it cast a shadow from the sun. Today, the watch on your wrist is considered just as much a reflection of your personal style as the shoes on your feet or the tie around your neck. “They say something about who you are,” says Michael Gordon, a watch expert and the store director of Tourneau TimeMachine in New York City. To ensure time is always on your side, we asked Gordon to take us through his top picks in each category.

Men's Fitness

Prior to the mag's redesign last year, it was unreadable. Now it's the coolest fitness mag out there. And the digital version is better than the print one. Food photography that jumps off the page, intuitive design and a fantastic monthly round-up of exercise videos. It's all I need to keep working on that six pack. I'll get there one day. I'm still fascinated that the ads are still stuck in the 90s.

7 Muscles Everyone Ignores

Strengthen it: Attach light to medium resistance tubing to a door hinge, then stand with your left side to it, grasping the handle of the tubing with your right hand. Bend right arm at a 45-degree angle to your side (your elbow is at your hip and your forearm is at a 90-degree angle in a handshake position), then rotate your arm at the elbow, pulling the tubing out towards the right side without pulling your upper arm away from your body— like a door opening on a hinge. Next, stand with your right side towards the door hinge. With your right arm bent at a 45-degree angle next to your side, grasp the handle of the tubing with your right hand and rotate your arm at the elbow, pulling the handle in towards the center of your body. Repeat 10 to 12 times on each side, alternating sides for each set.

Real Deal Workouts

In the early ’90s, the Buffalo Bills fought their way through the AFC playoffs to the promised land of the Super Bowl only to get punked—for four straight years. Chris Cormier can top even that. He’s one of the most successful competitors in the history of the Arnold Classic. In his nine Arnolds, he never placed lower than fifth. He’s tied with Flex Wheeler for the most top-two finishes and one behind Dexter Jackson for top-three finishes. But those marks only highlight the depth of the Real Deal’s searing frustration, because Wheeler and Jackson are tied with each other for the most A.C. titles—four. Cormier has none.  Let’s look at it another way. In the 25 Arnold Classics prior to this year, 16 men finished second. Of those, four did so multiple times. Three were runner-up twice, but two of those subsequently won the title, and the third is Phil Heath, who takes great consolation in his Sandow collection. Cormier is the odd man out. Not only is he the only person to be second more than twice and the only person to be second more than twice who never won, but he was also second a ludicrous six times.

How To Protect Yourself from Sneaky Trans Fats that Harm Your Health and Affect Mood

Trans-fats are banned in restaurants in California, and some cities in the East have followed suit. The FDA requires that foods be labeled if they contain trans-fat, however, there’s a loophole: If a food contains less than 0.5 g of trans-fats, it can say “trans-fat free” on the label, but you will still find partially hydrogenated oil in the ingredients. A classic example is commercial peanut butter that contains trans-fat to prevent oil separation.

10 Signs You're Bad in Bed and Don't Even Know It

Fix it: “Foreplay, foreplay, foreplay—I can’t say it enough!” Morse says. You may be ready to go the second you get home, but you have to remember, sex is mostly mental for women. They have to be warmed up, physically and mentally. “Most women not only enjoy foreplay, but we need it in order to get aroused before actual intercourse,” Morse says. Foreplay can even start hours before you're through the door. Send her a text about how much you can’t wait to see her or how beautiful she looked this morning. Then when you get home kiss and caress her before you start taking her clothes off. Foreplay isn’t a suggestion; it’s a requirement for most women.
