The 12 Best Foods on the Planet

Philadelphia No American city does sandwiches better than Philly. (A tip of the hat to you, though, New Orleans.) The town runs on roast pork, steaks wit’ whiz, and the Schmitter. But though each of those renditions deserves space in the culinary canon, it’s the hoagie that steals place of pride. And don’t you call it a damn “sub,” either. Hoagies are made with fresh-baked thick, hearty, sesame-seed-speckled rolls. Sub rolls are flaccid facsimiles. Hoagies cram in flavor with capicola, mortadella, fresh mozzarella, pepper shooters, and those honkin’ huge Jersey tomatoes. Subs depend on squeeze bottles of dressing to cover up the flat taste of lackluster meats. Hoagies are king. Subs are, well, subservient.

Quad Squad: The Squat and Leg Press

The squat , known as the granddaddy of all bodybuilding exercises, simultaneously works more major muscles than any other resistance-training movement. The quadriceps (quads), hamstrings and gluteus maximus (glutes) are specifically targeted, while the hip and torso muscles are incorporated for stabilization and to assist the primary muscles. You can see why many experts in weight training consider the squat to be a whole-body exercise, even though you utilize it as a lower-body move.

10 Training Tips for Gaining Lean Muscle

Hitting the gym twice a week is fine if you want to maintain the muscle you already have, but if you are shooting to add some size you should consider increasing your training frequency to 4-5 times per week. Even though these sessions may need to be a bit shorter to allow for recovery , the increased exposure to a training stimulus can be helpful in packing on mass .

8 Weeks to Muscle Workout

A lot of guys have trouble adding size. The solution? Increase volume. This, however, requires more recovery. Without it, you’ll crap out before long. Resting between sets should allow you to keep things moving along but not so fast that you burn out. Choose weights within your means. Because you’ll be doing more reps and sets per body part, you need to start with a slightly lighter load than you might normally use. Pick at least three exercises per body part, or more if you can handle it. Four per body part will typically work better, as you switch up stance and grip on each move. None of your sets should be fewer than 10 reps—rather, 12 should be your target. You need to put in some work to really tire out the muscles and make them grow. Save cheats, forced reps, and dropsets for the last set of your final exercise or two for a particular body part.

8 Mass Ingredients

For most bodybuilders, pushing through punishing workouts day in and day out is actually the easier part of their regimen. Much harder is sticking with a diet that maintains an anabolic state — that is, building muscle — for the 22 or 23 hours a day when our bodies are desperately trying to recuperate between workouts. Luckily, nutrition need not be akin to rocket science. This simple checklist runs down eight top foods for mass building.

I'm Coming Home (To Carbs) - Born Fitness

Before anyone cared what I had to say about fitness, I was a guy (formerly fat) that didn’t really understand food. I grew up in Northbrook, IL, and experienced a typical suburban upbringing, complete with home-cooked meals. My mom’s cooking nurtured a love of all food, but I had a special soft spot for baked goods: brownies, cookies, and Rice Krispie treats. I ate those carb-loaded treats and became fat, gooey, and slow. And in my case, maybe all those carbs even stunted my growth. (Wait, let’s not start that rumor.)

Weighty Matters: Diet Book Review: Wheat Belly

Well if not anything else you will agree everyone has an opinion about everything. Reviews and bloggers alike know what works for them and are passionate about freedom of speech. Sometimes they are right and sometime not. If you have one or more of over 100 autoimmune disease, you realize how inflammation is a part of your everyday life. The more inflammation from food and the world around us, the more diseases you have. Some runs in pairs. All I know is that you just want it to stop. That was my case, I have Hashimoto's thyroid disease. I am 63 and years of a poor diet placed a toll on my health. I had most of the conditions list in this article. Dr.s are so eager to hand out drugs to "help" but in fact they just compound the problem. I asked the question, do you want to walk or do you want to be pushed around in a wheelchair. So I started an elimination diet to determine if food allergies were the problem. I eliminated wheat, soy, dairy, eggs, all GMO's, peanuts, and restricted my sugar to 5 grams or less. After a few days of misery due to addictions to wheat and sugar, I started to lose weight, l lb a day.

How to Get Built Like a Brick Shit House - Zach Even-Esh

Great post and from the comments you can feel the intensity and passion from my fellow Undergrounders. When I began training at home I told myself I would never again go back to my old gym. The feeling of raw power as I lifted stones, sandbags, tires and everything else simply could not be matched in the gym. Due to a lifetime membership at 24hr and dues that equal $5 a month I said what the hell and kept it. As my attitude towards was constitutes quality training I found myself developing a me vs them attitude in the gym. When I am in between dumbell snatches and standing near the cable machine I tried not to laugh when they ask if I was using it. Over time I thought that the gym was an evil place. I continued training myself at home then said what the hell and started taking my style back indoors. I brought with me chains, ropes and clubbells. I take what the gym has and make it work for me, trainers ask what I am training for and I say “the uknown”.. I have shared my thoughts on training with many people there and can see there wheels begining to turn. Yes there is a pussification problem but also an obesity problem .

6 Gluten-Filled Foods That Are Good For You

All it took was one major study that showed that gluten intolerance was, in fact, a real issue for the entire world (it seems like it, doesn't it?) to go on a gluten-free diet. Peter Gibson, a professor of gastroenterology at Monash University and director of the GI unit at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, conducted that study in 2011 and has since revisited his findings with a more aggressive and controlled approach. The second time around, Gibson found the opposite of his initial study: Subjects reported gastrointestinal distress without any clear physical cause. These findings show that gluten was not the root of the problem, but that gluten intolerance or gluten sensitivity might actually be psychological.

5 Ways To Boost Growth Hormone

Are you one of those “rest until I’m ready” types? Well, if you’re jacked, we’re not going to argue with your approach. But if you’re genuinely in need of some GH-induced gains, you may want to watch the clock a bit more. Studies have shown that resting one minute or less sends growth-hormone levels higher, which translates to more muscle growth. Try training in weight ranges that are heavy but still allow for adequate recovery in that time. The surge in GH may help you adapt to shorter rest over time.

The Truth About Post-Workout Nutrition

In life and in fitness, consistency is one of the main secrets to success. You can’t work out once in a while and expect to see real results. The same holds true when it comes to your post-workout nutrition; it’s consistency over time that will bring about major changes. Feed your muscles what they need after every workout within the metabolic window, and you will be amazed at the body you'll achieve.

7 Best Carbs to Build Muscle

Benefit: Convenient high-calorie foodBreakfast cereals with at least two grams (g) of fiber per serving can be converted into good offseason bodybuilding foods. 5 Things to Know Before Getting Tatted Up

Today’s generation is lucky because it has the Internet. Most good shops will have good things written about them in reviews on the Internet nowadays. You always want to look at a shop’s cleanliness, and everyone there should have portfolios of their specific work. You want to look for clean and crisp lines and shading that doesn’t look choppy but smooth. All the color should be solid and bright.  When you're looking at any black or gray work, check for varying degrees of weight in the shading and smoothness. Unless you’re looking for something superspecific, it’s always good to look at versatility and how long the artist has been doing it. How long has the shop been there? Have they had the same guys working there for a long time? Ask around to see what people may say about the place. Talk to heavily tattooed collectors, and they'll usually point you in the right direction.

35
Eccentric Pause for Expanded Muscle

When we pause the bar and no movement whatsoever is established, yet the muscle is still under tension, we allow for the optimal amount of cross bridges to be engaged. It’s important to understand that eccentric-pause exercises have a significant function in overall force production. Any exercise that you conduct in a standard weight lifting fashion on its second day can be applied in an eccentric-pause methodology. The eccentric count should occur slowly and the pause should come between the transition of the eccentric and concentric phases.

Weighty Matters: About that "Powerful" New Obesity Video Everyone's Sharing

I watched the first five seconds of that atrocity and turned it off. You are SO RIGHT!!!! As someone who was fat from the age of six, I know from personal experience that if fat shaming worked, I'd weigh about -320 pounds. Life was one long string of humiliations that caused me to pull into myself and eat for comfort. You want to make a kid fat? Shame them! Both of my kids had weight issues, but I determined that while I could control what I bought and served, their weight, their body, was THEIR issue. Both dealt with the issue, each in their individual way, when they were ready. They still struggle, but their genetics are not on their side--every single relative (except "that one exception") in their family is or was obese. And you are so right: the environment has changed dramatically from when I was a kid. When I was a teenager, I worked at McDonald's. The average meal that people bought is what is called a Kid's Meal today--a small hamburger, a few french fries, and a small Coke. I mean, a SMALL Coke. And that was a once-in-a-while treat. My mother was one of the few working mothers of that generation in our suburban neighborhood, but even she made sure that we had a home-made meal made from fresh foods (some from our own garden) every night.

When’s the Right Time to Rehydrate with Coconut Water?

What Coconut Water Doesn't Have Coconut water falls short when it comes to sodium content. It has only a third of the sodium—30 mg per 8 ounces—that traditional sports drinks contain. This isn’t a deal breaker if you’re drinking coconut water during a light workout or a workout lasting less than an hour. But if you’ve got a vigorous gym session on the books, keep in mind that with intensity comes sweat. And with sweat, your body loses sodium. In fact, just one liter of sweat can flush out 1,300 milligrams of sodium, making the mineral an important ingredient to include in your post-workout beverage—and a traditional sports drink a smarter choice.

Big Wide Nasty

Ever since Lee Haney, a big, detailed back has been an Olympia requisite.  Eight-time champion Haney, six-timer Dorian Yates, and eight-time winner Ronnie Coleman each upped the ante in dorsal development, pushing the boundaries of what was possible (and what came to be expected) when we’re talking Olympia-level back building. The Mr. Olympias since—Jay Cutler, Dexter Jackson, and Phil Heath—have built on and refined what the TotaLee Awesome One, the Shadow, and the Big Nasty ushered in.

Save Yourself 200 Calories This Weekend

The extra 200 calories from the fast food or full service meals made up about 10% of participants' total daily intake. The study estimated there was a 20% increase in daily sodium from the restaurant meals, only 13% from fast food meals, making the restaurant meals worse in some cases. What's more, researchers note that on days when study participants dined out, they didn't cut calories during other meals.

Straight-Up Delt Workout for Massive Shoulders

One of the worst feelings in the world is the anticipation of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMs) that never materializes. You may feel a little tight the next day, but it’s not the kind of soul-rending ache in your muscle bellies that you typically associate with growth. These are the times when you typically commit to crafting (or adopting) a routine designed to remind those muscle fibers, whose growth-resistant antics now border on contempt, who is really in charge. And when it comes to your shoulders, this type of beatdown is even more important. Trained to some degree on every other workout day, delts are quick to become complacent. But with a careful mixture of exercises and the proper manipulation of training variables that push your muscles beyond failure, your shoulders can see impressive and oftentimes rapid growth.

Peaking for Powerlifting - Juggernaut Training Systems

When many people begin to mess around with weights for the first time, it seems like the entire goal of the endeavor is to max out; to see ‘how much you can lift.” This approach to lifting continues longer for some than others, and has even evolved into a set of training methodologies (Westside, with its emphasis on training maxes, comes to mind). Of course most people begin to understand at some point that the best way to actually get stronger over the longer term is to train and not just max out. Most will understand that the process of getting stronger is distinct from the process of showing off that new-found strength.
