The Titan of the Fitness World Says He's All Natural

If classmates wondered about him at 16, the rest of the world’s been wondering about him—and eager to knock him down a peg—ever since he appeared as Thor on the first run of American Gladiators in the early ’90s. Many of O’Hearn’s cast mates later admitted to using steroids, thus implicating him by association. But O’Hearn always maintained that he was natural, even though he was bigger and stronger than his juiced-up colleagues. When he went on to become the only member of the original cast to appear in the 2008 reboot—this time as Titan, and in even better shape—it made you scratch your head even more.

The Complete 4-Week Beginner's Workout Program

In the fourth and final week of the program, you’ll train four days in a four-way split that hits each bodypart just once (except for calves and abs, which are each trained twice). Four-day splits are common among experienced lifters because they involve training fewer bodyparts (typically 2–3) per workout, which gives each muscle group ample attention and allows you to train with higher volume. As you’ll see, chest and triceps are paired up, as are back with biceps and quads with hamstrings, each a very common pairing among novice and advanced bodybuilders. Shoulders are trained more or less on their own, and you’ll alternate hitting calves and abs — which respond well to being trained multiple times per week — every other workout. No new exercises are introduced in Week 4 so that you can focus on intensity in your workouts instead of learning new movements.

The Best Exercise for Each Muscle According to Science

First things first: “These studies are looking at which exercise in isolation causes the most activity in a particular muscle,” says Jessica Matthews, M.S., exercise science professor at Miramar College in San Diego, CA and senior advisor for health and fitness education for the American Council on Exercise. “But that doesn’t mean they’re the best exercise.” Your goals are a better guide of what exercises are right for you; if your end-all is bigger muscles and symmetry (say, as a bodybuilder), then, yes, incorporating these into your routine makes a lot of sense. If you’re more interested in increasing your overall fitness, though, you may be better served choosing exercises that improves the body’s function, i.e., how it moves on a daily basis. “And if you’re someone who only has time to train two to three times per week, it’s essential to have a well-rounded routine to train the whole body in one workout.” That said, here are the goods, according to science.

28 Days to Lean Meal Plan

You'’re training hard every day with your program, going heavy on the weights and sweating up a storm with cardio. Newsflash: While that'’s critical to your ultimate success, that'’s just not enough for you to lose the fat you want to.To reach your get-lean goal, you must also follow a get-lean diet. Why? Even if you work out hard for an hour every day, that still leaves 23 more hours for you to wreck all your hard work in the gym with just one slip-up: a measly handful of chips, a beer with the guys or a burger at lunch. Diet is a huge, so to speak, part of the fat-loss equation. It's the backbone of your entire plan, the foundation of a hard body.Bodybuilding nutrition consultant Jim Juge says nutrition determines your success or failure, plain and simple. "The diet is 65% of what you need to get in shape,"” he says. Juge would know, as he'’s helped countless dedicated people reach their goals, from achieving their best body ever to placing first in bodybuilding competitions. You've got 28 days to get to your goal, so we've recruited Juge to help you every step of the way. He'’s adapted a traditional bodybuilding competitor's diet for a non-competitor (that means you!) who wants to look his best, shedding as much fat as possible in a very short time.

The Dominican Dominator's Massive Plan

“When I first started, I focused on powerlifting. It was one of those things where the other kids would ask how much you could bench rather than how big your chest is. So in the beginning, it was just about lifting heavy rather than lifting to look like a bodybuilder. But even to this day, I love the feeling of lifting heavy barbells and dumbbells. It doesn’t feel like a workout until I’ve lifted some big weight. From very early on, one thing that was important to me, as far as training goes, was form. I used to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger training in Pumping Iron, and I’d look at experienced guys in the gym and pay attention to the form they used. Then I would visualize what I had seen them doing and I’d do it myself. When I saw guys doing those quick half-rep bench presses, I knew their form was bad because Arnold would bring the bar all the way down to his chest and all the way back up. So I learned to train the right way, lifting through a full range of motion and never using a weight that I couldn’t handle."

4 Reasons to Stop Slouching

Shoulders back, chest out. Your mom has told you a million times and, believe it or not, she’s not just saying it to nag—she actually has good reasons. Slouching not only makes you look less attractive, it can also affect your health. And, look around your office, most cube workers are guiltily of bad posture. “People who sit at a desk for a long period of time tend to roll their shoulders in and hang their head forward,” says Dr. Jason Queiros, a Chiropractor at Stamford Sports and Spine in Connecticut. “Every inch you hold your head forward, you add 10 pounds of pressure on your spine. Let’s say you’re leaning into your monitor by just two inches, that’s 20 extra pounds that your back and spinal column have to endure.” How much damage can those 20 pounds cause? Lots! But we are here to help. There are also some easy stretches you can do to help correct your slouch, which we list after the ailments bad posture can cause.

Trail Running Inspiration From the World's Fittest Endurance Athletes

It's the type of workout that can make 2012 IronMan champ Pete Jacobs say, "This is a different kind of pain." And we know the first few ascents and descents set everyone's lungs on fire and wreck even the toughest athlete's quads—but as Jacobs remind us, a different kind of pain leads to a different type of fitness. "It's a fitness reality check. Your body adapts to your chosen sport, but never to the trails. Trail running makes everything else easier." On June 21st, Jacobs, along with 14 other professional endurance athletes representing five intercontinental regions came together to run the Asics Beat the Sun Challenge around trail running's most iconic destination; the Mont Blanc massif in Chamonix, France.

50 Olympias, 50 Tips

On September 19, 1965, a standing-room-only crowd of 2,500 rabid fans in the Brooklyn Academy of Music screamed as Larry Scott was (literally) crowned the first Mr. Olympia. Exactly 50 years to the day, on September 19, 2015, in Orleans Arena, the 51st Mr. Olympia will be staged. Only 13 men have won the 50 O’s prior to this year’s edition. In their honor, we’ve assembled advice from the victor of each contest—from Scott’s initial two to Phil Heath’s recent four. Like tweets, no tip is longer than 140 characters, and affixed to each are hashtags regarding that year’s Olympia—its location and major story lines. This invaluable guidance from bodybuilding’s legends as well as the hashtag history lesson demonstrates that some things have changed while others have stayed the same over the Mr. Olympia’s first 50 years.

BPI Sports' BEST BCAA™ is not your typical outdated, run-of-the-mill, same as everyone else, outdated BCAA product. Not even close. This formula is the first to bond the three branched chain amino acids - leucine, isoleucine and valine - utilizing a proprietary process route, to form oligiopeptides (a bonded chain of amino acids; for example, a peptide linked chain). The oligiopeptide-based branched chain amino acids may act as a better transport vehicle, allowing for more efficient metabolization, greater bio-activity, enhanced onset time, and a generally improved BCAA model. And, the scientific minds at BPI Sports didn't stop here ...

25 Foods to Eliminate Your Love Handles

While these foods won’t literally incinerate the fat from your abdominal, they will promote weight loss, and aid in your long-term goals without making you feel deprived. “So many diets are bereft of proper protein,” Elkaim says. Instead, many guys count calories and eat tiny portions of high-sugar foods or juices that actually create a starving sensation, he adds. The principle behind the selection of these foods is simple: You'll eat real food (Read: not a bunch of bars or shakes) that come from every major food group. “You want 80 percent of what you eat to be raw, whole, plant-deprived foods to support your system and create an optimized environment for health and wellness,” Elkaim says. We picked foods packed with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to keep you energized to power through every day and any workout.

Why to Eat an Avocado Every Day

In a recent Penn State study, 45 overweight subjects were given three cholesterol-lowering diets with the same number of calories: one diet that was low in fat, and two that were moderately high in fat and included either avocado or nuts and oils. After five weeks, the avocado diet was most effective in lowering “bad” cholesterol, or LDL. The study suggests that it’s the compounds in avocado— not just its healthy fat content—that make it so successful in lowering LDL. “Avocados house more phytosterols [one-half an avocado has 57mg], a plant compound linked with cholesterol reduction, than any other fruit,” it states.

This Is Why You Get The Drunk Munchies

There's now a scientific explanation for this not-so-uncommon occurence. According to ScienceAlert , a new study published by Indiana University revealed that people are prone to eating more when they're drunk. That may be a big 'duh', but now we know why. Alcohol simulates the hypothalamus—the part in the brain that regulates thirst and hunger—and makes it more receptive to food aromas.  Consequently, with an increased responsiveness to savory smells, a drunk person in the same environment as a sober one will naturally consume more food.

Competition Pak (advanced)

"What do I eat the last week with Fighter Diet before my fitness competition?" This is one of the most annoying questions I get. I know you're anxious and want to do all perfectly, but listen, you cannot plan your last week several weeks out! First of all, the last week is not a magic event. There won't be major huge differences in your looks. If you're not in shape a week before you are going to walk out on stage you won't get in better shape. Yes, you can reduce some water retention, improve your definition by putting a tan on, but face it, there are no tricks that will either break or make you! Pauline Nordin to the far left   If the last week was so important, why even bother doing the prep 3 months prior to the show, huh? Remember what the prep is for: to lose fat to see muscle
