Fitness, Diet, Form: 6 Questions Answered

It could be a lack of mobility or lower-back strength, or how your body is proportioned. If it’s the latter, the exercise might not be for you—and that’s OK. Every exercise doesn’t work with every body type. However, if you struggle to get into the conventional deadlift position with a neutral spine and it’s a mobility issue, try different deadlift variations: Trap-bar deads, rack pulls, and sumo deadlifts are all options. Additionally, focusing on hip mobility, core stability, and practicing the hip-hinge pattern will help “grease the groove” and improve the range of motion in your hips. Now, if you struggle to maintain a neutral spine once you start the lift, it’s probably due to a weak trunk. Good mornings, back extensions, dead bugs, and slow mountain climbers can help strengthen the lower back and anterior core. Also, all of those exercises make you maintain a neutral spine while you flex and extend your hips—all required during a deadlift.

Lose Fat Fast

Eating small meals throughout the day may not be the best way to lose fat after all. In a study published in a recent edition of the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers compared the effects of grazing throughout the day with those of intermittent fasting, a strategy that involves forgoing food for a certain period of time. The researchers divided healthy mice up into two groups: One group was allowed to eat at will throughout the day while the other was limited to an eight-hour feeding window each night. Both groups consumed the same amount of food each day and were administered identical diets that consisted of the equivalent of pizza, ice cream, and beer.

How Many Reps?

Count all you want, but don’t count on counting for maximum muscle growth. I’ll say it again, for the umpteenth time: Bodybuilding is about quality, not quantity. People will produce data proving one rep range, or number of sets, or training cycle, etc., is the answer, but it all comes down to the pump you’re able to build in the muscle. That’s the ultimate gauge of whether everything you’re doing in your training is worthwhile. People are constantly commenting on the amount of weight I use, my high reps and my basic exercises, but those are dictated by my sole quest of developing a specific sensation in the muscle. I don’t tackle a workout obsessed with being able to lift a specific number of pounds for a specific number of repetitions. My goal is to lift whatever weight it takes, for however many reps and sets it takes, to feel a good full pump in the muscle being worked.

Shredded Abs Without Ab Exercises

If your abs are nonexistent, but your diet is in order, the problem may be that you’re performing too many isolation exercises or relying too much on machines. If your body is always supported and locked into one position, your core doesn’t have to stabilize it. Try doing standing exercises and concentrate on classic strength-building moves like squats, dead-lifts, overhead presses, and bent-over rows. Your core is engaged in all these lifts to protect your spine, so you’re getting ab work while training other muscles—and you won’t get bored as with sit-ups.

Metabolic Modifiers

Stress the protein: more chicken, egg whites, fish and whey-based protein powder. Why? Not all calories — from carbs, protein and fat — are equal in their efficiency to be stored as bodyfat. When you eat a high-protein meal, it exerts a greater metabolic-boosting effect than carbs or fat. Eating protein while on a lower-calorie diet saves muscle, which helps keep the metabolism elevated. You should get at least one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. If bodyfat is a problem for you, aim for 1.5 g of protein per pound daily.

Proper Form on Some of the Most Fundamental Exercises

The permutations of chest exercises run the gamut from bench presses to cable and machine flyes, most with multiple angles. To build muscle mass in your chest most efficiently, you must do pressing movements straightforward to arm’s length. It’s the best way to contract your pecs against the most weight. Flyes — done by keeping your arms straight, splaying them wide, then contracting with a hugging motion — are not as powerful of a pressing movement, so they’re not as effective for building maximum mass.
