This two-week program mandates the use of heavy compound exercises to start every weight workout. By keeping heavy training in your program, you’ll force your body to keep its natural production of growth hormone (GH). High GH, which peaks while you sleep, is a key player in the fat-burning process. Then, by targeting individual body parts with Tabata-style work, you’ll increase local blood flow to working muscles. On each Tabata exercise, start with a weight you can handle for 12–15 reps. As the work drags on, your rep counts will fade. Pause only when needed, and perform partial reps if necessary to keep going the entire 20 seconds.

Fitness, Diet, Form: 6 Questions Answered

It could be a lack of mobility or lower-back strength, or how your body is proportioned. If it’s the latter, the exercise might not be for you—and that’s OK. Every exercise doesn’t work with every body type. However, if you struggle to get into the conventional deadlift position with a neutral spine and it’s a mobility issue, try different deadlift variations: Trap-bar deads, rack pulls, and sumo deadlifts are all options. Additionally, focusing on hip mobility, core stability, and practicing the hip-hinge pattern will help “grease the groove” and improve the range of motion in your hips. Now, if you struggle to maintain a neutral spine once you start the lift, it’s probably due to a weak trunk. Good mornings, back extensions, dead bugs, and slow mountain climbers can help strengthen the lower back and anterior core. Also, all of those exercises make you maintain a neutral spine while you flex and extend your hips—all required during a deadlift.

Bodybuilders often incorporate a variety of machines and exercises into their back training (which also relies on shoulder joints); however, imagination and innovation frequently fail when it comes to deltoids. Gain 10 Pounds of Muscle in 4 Weeks

The second half of the program is all about maximizing size with slightly higher reps and an emphasis on intensity. Rep ranges move up to 10-12 for most exercises, which is ideal for promoting muscle hypertrophy (growth). Overall volume increases slightly during these two weeks, mainly due to the addition of isolation exercises that you’ll perform before compound movements for your chest, back, shoulders and legs. Called pre-exhaustion, this technique dramatically increases workout intensity. You fatigue the main target muscle with an isolation exercise, then hit it in this fatigued state with a compound move, which if done right will lead to your main muscle failing before assistance muscles give out. (For example, for chest the dumbbell flye hits the pecs directly, so your triceps shouldn’t end up being the weak link and cause the termination of the set during the bench press).
