The 2012 World’s Strongest Man was the 35th edition of World’s Strongest Man hosted at the Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, California. The qualifying heats were held from September 24–27, and the finals took place Sept. 30 & Oct. 1, 2012. The winner was Žydrūnas Savickas, it was his third WSM title. Vytautas Lalas of Lithuania was second, and Iceland’s Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson was third.

After the five time world’s strongest man champion Mariusz Pudzianowski left the competition after his 2009 runner up placement Zydrunas Savickas went on a 2 year run and in 2011 was hoping to land his 3rd championship in a row. Brian Shaw a promising young american competitor would share the lead with Savickas going into the final event (the atlas stones). The champion is decided in world’s strongest man fashion with a winner take all race to the finish.

Winifred Pristell is 70 years-young, great-grandmother of 3, with fingers twisted by arthritis who benches, squats and deadlifts more weight than many young men you find in the gym. Winifred has set two world records for her age and weight by dead lifting 288lbs and bench pressing 188lbs.

Bill Kazmaier wrestled during the 1980s for promotions such as Stampede Wrestling and Continental Championship Wrestling. His biggest national exposure came when he debuted for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1991 at Halloween Havoc. He received several shots at Lex Luger’s WCW World Heavyweight Championship but failed to win the title. He also briefly teamed with Rick Steiner, only to lose to The Enforcers in a tournament final for the WCW World Tag Team Championship.

In 1993, he stopped two US Air Force T-34 Aircraft (285 horsepower each) from taking off, earning him “The Association of Oldetime Barbell and Strongmen Highest Achievement Award.” In 1995, Dennis successfully prevented four Harley Davidson Motorcycles from moving at full throttle for 12 seconds. In 1998, he bent a ½ inch thick, 17.25 inch long steel bar around his neck into a “U” shape. In 2001, he bent an 8 inch adjustable wrench into the shape of an “S” – another incredible feat that he performed on multiple occasions. He has broken official police handcuffs, easily tears thick phonebooks vertically using only two fingers and can drive a nail with one blow of his fist through a frying griddle and 2” thick board- at the same time. And these are just a handful of his incredible feats of strength. Lest we forget his one arm curl of 98 pounds x 10 reps performed at a bodyweight of 148 pounds!

Kevin Nee is the youngest man to ever have what it takes to be a competitor in the World’s Strongest Man championship. Born August 21 1985 Kevin Nee is also the youngest man to ever make it to the strongman finals. Kevin Nee has competed in three of the World’s Strongest Man championships.
